Hello, I'm new to the community. I have been playing flight simulators off and on for four or so years, but never for an extended length of time.

I'm looking for more involvement. Nobody I know plays combat flight sims.

I have LOMAC. I have been thinking about getting FC but then I found out that there is now an FC2 and a Platinum edition in the works. Should I hold off until Platinum comes out and pick up a new copy of LOMAC w/ FC1 + 2? (Buying LOMAC over again wouldn't be a big deal for the convenience in having everything bundled.

Three other questions.

One- As I said, I'm looking for more involvement. Anyone want to let a rookie fly with them? (I'll need a bit of time to get re-acquainted with LOMAC.) Sadly, this leads to #2.

I have an X52 Joystick w/ HOTAS (I think that's what it's called). It seems to assume that I am twisting the stick- when I am not. As you can imagine, this is a rather large issue when trying to fly. Thoughts/Ideas? It's been two odd years since I've bought this thing, so I don't have any proof of purchase or warranty information. I might have the box kicking around.

Finally- I have some spare cash kicking around that needs to be burned. Is the whole TrackIR thing worth it?

Thanks.

Batoa

P.S.

My apologies if this is out of place. I was unsure where to put it.

Hi Batoa,

I can answer you this ones:

Should I hold off until Platinum comes out and pick up a new copy of LOMAC w/ FC1 + 2? (Buying LOMAC over again wouldn't be a big deal for the convenience in having everything bundled.

.. well it's really up to you

Finally- I have some spare cash kicking around that needs to be burned. Is the whole TrackIR thing worth it?

Definitive. And everyone who has it will tell you the same. It adds a lot to immersion. I don't dogfight so much my self, but with trackir, you will have a huge advantage in WVR.

I would buy FC2 online, no reason to wait for platinum when you already got LOMAC. You can burn it on a dvd on your own. The difference between LOMAC and FC2 is huge and ED improved pretty much everything + you get multiplayer compatibility with DCS Black Shark.

Finally- I have some spare cash kicking around that needs to be burned. Is the whole TrackIR thing worth it?

Definitely yes. It opens a new dimension in flying sims. The ability to look around without using a mouse is just priceless, especialy in condintion when you have your hands full. I cannot imagine going back to the days when I used the mouse to look around.

Welcome to your new life, Batoa. :)

What winz said, pretty much. If you are fine with not having a disc (there won't be much difference between disc and DL, same protection and same content, but different delivery method) then you could purchase the DL version from lockon.co.uk. You do not strictly need FC1 to get FC2 running - they would be separate installs. FC1 does have the Crimean peninsula which FC2 doesn't, but FC2 has expanded territory to the south and east instead.

However, if you do have a capped internet connection, then downloading a couple gigs might be an inconvenience and then I'd say wait for disc and/or platinum. Note that the LOMAC/FC2 bundle will be north america only as far as I know due to some distribution right peculiarities. Rest of the west will have FC2 only.

On TrackIR - if you have the money for it, definitely get it. It'll completely revolutionize your SA and general gameplay experience. As an additional perk, it's also compatible with ArmA and most racing games, if you play those.

On your HOTAS, I'd say doublecheck your axis mappings - there might be a conflict somewhere where it's taking rudder input from something else, like the mouse or sliders or something like that. On that note however, if you are looking to sink some cash into it, I'd definintely recommend a set of pedals. They're not extremely critical on modern fast-movers like the F15 and Flankers, but for T-Frogs (with the AFM), Ka-50 and future DCS products with their higher-fidelity flight models they'll be very nice for getting precision - especially during crosswind landings or when having lost an engine or part of a wing.

On being taught the ropes, so to speak, there's a lot of friendly people around that can probably help. Don't be afraid to get online once you have FC2 and ask questions - get TS3 and/or Vent installed and ask around for someone that wants a rookie on their wing and you might end up recruited into a squad. :)
