Hi guys,

Just a question about trim, I've watched the producers notes, spent around 15 or so hours on the sim now and read a fair bit of the manual, but STILL don't quite get the trim! Is it attached to the autopilot, for example, when I release trim the chopper often wants to keep going that way, I've found then I'm manoeuvring I need to hold and release trim every time I turn (else it spins and goes a bit uncontrollable), yet in the producers notes he says using it should be a rarity, can somebody please shed some light on this?

Thanks!

Holding down the trim button should be rarity - just to clear things up. Make sure you also read about trimming in the FAQ thread.

Then see if this will be helpful somehow http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=921771&postcount=448

Cleared it up perfectly :) thank you!

Normally I use autopilot when flying in a straight line. But when in combat where I need to maneuver when using rockets or guns, I use flight director. FD gives me the stability features the autopilot channels provide but without the 'fight' the heading and attitude feature provides when FD is off.

I think Trimmer is one of those things that is a bit tricky at first, especially with out a FFB stick. My basic rull is hold it while manuvering. Once pointed where I need to be, let off. Make any fine adjustments that are needed after that. I also have the heading switch for the auto pilot programmed to my HOTAS. It's handy for things like rocket runs. It allows me to freely use rudder with out having to fight the AP. Then I flick it back on for basic navigation.

RAMjb,

This talk should end like "Normal Operational Procedures does not allow disengaging AP channels, period!" :)

Same applies to using FD all the time during combat, IIRC.

Like I said in the linked topic - holding the trim button is most probably not what real pilots do / are allowed to. From my short experience (of trying to fly by the manual) you don't need to hold the trim button for more than 2 seconds. Ever.

Real pilots are discouraged to hold trim button, because forces are removed from cyclic while trim button is pressed. Shaking hand combined with light cyclic could lead to disaster, so they are encouraged to press it frequently for short duration.

I don't think that FD is dis-allowed by the book. It is used to manually navigate the helicopter. This means you can use it in normal occasions but it will add more workload to you since you have to take care of the navigation at all times. Probably the correct case would be that "It is not not advised to use FD all the time, only when situation needs it", but I don't really know the "by the book" rules of FD.

I use FD if the combat situation needs it (when engaging defensive, want to launch rockets etc). I set the trimming postion by pressing-releasing the trimmer button instantly. Sometimes I have to hold the trimmer button for short periods (a few secs) only when stabilising the Shark. This "holding" isn't adviced for RL pilots but then again, in our case, the stick can't simulate trimming correctly unless the stick is FF. So "holding" trim button can be useful in our case but if you want to fly by the book you shouldn't use it.

Exactly. In my initial DCS "career" I crashed many times during violent brake when fired upon during hover. I also used to hold down the trim button "to eliminate AP" and it usually led to rotor blades intersection.

Hmmm, strange it should work. Try again :D
