Nate--IRL-- Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 Quick question - In the sim, does wind affect a Ka-50 in autohover? Yes, too high a wind will prevent Auto hover and the ability to turn to target. Nate Ka-50 AutoPilot/stabilisation system description and operation by IvanK- Essential Reading
Zembla Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 I just don't know about the hover mode. I engaged it using several parameters: 100 kph 200m - brought it to a hover just fine <5 kph 200m - brought it to a hover just fine <5kph <10m - light on but it started moving forward 80 kph 100m in a big flare - brought it to a hover just fine If I recall correctly, and your tests seem to support that assumption, auto-hover only works above 4m or something. If you say <10m, it might have been too close to the ground. For auto-hover both the attitude and altitude is locked. The altitude hold channel on the AP activates automatically as well, and that one cuts out under 4m, as far as I remember. -Z [sigpic][/sigpic] I aaaaaam ... a banana!

Nate--IRL-- Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 It will if you don't trim for the wind. However if you trim to account for the wind, you can't change heading much without drifting. Nate Ka-50 AutoPilot/stabilisation system description and operation by IvanK- Essential Reading
Tango Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 (edited) Hi, I prefer to do the auto hover with altitude hold off. Wind affects it quite a bit. You will drift if you don't watch it. A tip: if surrounded by sloping terrain, set the radio altimeter to an altitude below your hover height so you know if impact with the ground is imminent - that's saved me a few times! Best regards, Tango. Edited July 25, 2014 by Tango
Slayer Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 Another tip for you: Use the altitude hold channel and map the F key to a button on your throttle. This is the "collective brake-Altitude assign" key. The actual collective brake part doesnt work but it is the second function of assign altitude that will help you maintain level flight much easier. You will want to use this mode with the route mode. Also when you use route mode you still need to trim the aircraft slightly forward to maintain forward momentum otherwise the route mode just kind of points you in the direction of the next waypoint. The book says for the auto hover you should engage it after decelerating to nearly zero airspeed. If things go crazy when using auto hover it is usually because the rudder is linked to the trim and it sometimes has a mind of its own so I sometimes have to do a quick trim-reset then trim again to get stable. If you have the auto hover engaged it will not pitch and yaw as much when you reset.
