well I normally go by gator. it is the callsign I earned while in the navy. However gator was not available on the forums and I currently do not have any squadron affiliations. Not since the 14th Tophatters in Janes F/A-18.

I highly doubt there will be a TACAN or VOR/DME available to use over enemy teritory. Maybee in the training map but anywhere else would make no sense at all...

So you're saying that there would be no commercial aviation, of any kind, anywhere near, around, or over a combat area? Humm.... Didn't happen during Desert Shield/Storm; didn't happen in Bosnia, hasn't happened during Operation Iraqi Freedom; and it hasn't happend during Operation Enduring Freedom. Just "Shut it all down!" right? Create a massive hole in the worldwide aviation nets? Just Curious? How are your 'modern' warfighting jet aircraft going to get their INS/GPS updates or navigate in-theater - navigation and weapons delivery 'by the stars'? Still just curious....

Military is deploying own portable - well they are big like a vehicle - nav aids. And yes, INS/GPS - you just replied to your own question. INS are updated on the apron or inflight corrected with military GPS signals. And yes, stars are used too and flying navigators were trained to navigate by stars - it is last resort though. However there won't be many constant signal emitting navaids available, and usually far away from the front line. The ones used by military will switch on and off only for mission purpose, right? Although one can expect portable TACAN near the airfields visited by US aircrafts.

Back on topic, given the abilities of the ABRIS, I would have to believe that the A-10C would have at least the same or better capabilities for navigation built into the CDU, be they civilian or military assets (re: VOR/NDB, etc.). I don't believe there is an option in DCS:BS to turn off navigation aids completely so I would presume that the same would hold true for DCS:A10.

We have mobile nav points that can be setup and taken down in about 5 mins. I was an operator in desert shield/storm. back pack sized 2 man team one with the transmitter and one with the battery pack and antenna. As for tacan, the modern tacan has a range of 389 miles for DME or distance. The bearing is quite a bit more. So having a complete hole is not true. The older or previous gen tacan had a range of 300 miles.

Oscar:

GPS is downloaded directly to the aircraft from satelite. The INS is self contained and records from flight start. If both are lost there is a standby compass and the pilots have maps.

Also based on the new systems the flight plans can be updated in flight. The somputers are dual redundant so if you lose one MC there is a back up system to maintain the aircraft in a mission capable state.

I was refering to the original poster of the thread. To me it sounded like he was speaking of traditional navaids that you would find on any civillian chart(VOR/DME). TACAN of course is Tactical Air Navigation and the sole domain of the military but these also are fixed navaids. What you're talking about sounds more like FAC stuff (ED is modeling this also)
