bigdog4215 Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 Can things like to many installed games or programs affect fps? Can a below average graphics card affect fps? Can low hard drive space affect fps? Is there anything else than can affect fps?
Frederf Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 CPU CPU CPU CPU. Anything that takes CPU cycles hurts.

shu77 Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 Looks like it just kills processors that arent in a list. If they're inactive youre probably not going to see a big hit, but if you have stuff churning away in the background its going to be pretty obvious Hornet, Super Carrier, Warthog & (II), Mustang, Spitfire, Albatross, Sabre, Combined Arms, FC3, Nevada, Gulf, Normandy, Syria AH-6J i9 10900K @ 5.0GHz, Gigabyte Z490 Vision G, Cooler Master ML120L, Gigabyte RTX3080 OC Gaming 10Gb, 64GB RAM, Reverb G2 @ 2480x2428, TM Warthog, Saitek pedals & throttle, DIY collective, TrackIR4, Cougar MFDs, vx3276-2k Combat Wombat's Airfield & Enroute Maps and Planning Tools
Frogfoot1606687865 Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 The worst cause of stutters ( not low frame rate) for me is the anti-virus checking each file on access. Either make sure it only checks EXE's (not every file), or turn it off if you feel brave. I found file indexing to be a good process to kill, and make sure your backup software does not kick in mid mission. (dont ask how I know!) bigdog4215 Posted August 4, 2010 Author Posted August 4, 2010 I've got game booster and anti virus is disabled.The only process it shows running is system idle.
EtherealN Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 System idle is nothing to worry about. Bad Graphics card can, in extreme cases, affect FPS, yes. Fragmented hard drive partitions can affect FPS, though usually through causing stutters. Bad sound drivers can also cause stutters. Low hard drive space can cause issues for the OS, which can cause issues for the simulator. My general advince on HDD space is "absolute minimum of 10% free space", and always defragment with regularity. 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Daniel "EtherealN" Agorander | Даниэль "эфирныйн" Агорандер Intel i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz, ASUS GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1GB, Samsung 830series 512GB SSD, Corsair AX850w, two BENQ screens and TM HOTAS Warthog DCS: A-10C Warthog FAQ | DCS: P-51D FAQ | Remember to read the Forum Rules | | | Life of a Game Tester

topdog Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 Appearances can be deceiving though, so be certain: [ i7 2600k 4.6GHz :: 16GB Mushkin Blackline LV :: EVGA GTX 1080ti 11GB ] [ TM Warthog / Saitek Rudder :: Oculus Rift :: Obutto cockpit :: Acer HN274H 27" 120Hz :: 3D Vision Ready ]
topdog Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 PSUs in general will become less efficient (typically also outputting more heat in the process) as time goes on. The components will eventually burn and the fans associated with them will also become impaired through use/time. Higher rating AND better quality PSUs (needs both really to qualify) can be worth purchasing to put this off for as long as possible. This can lead to system performance problems, but you wouldn't normally expect this to be a concern or need upgrading of the machine is relatively new (if less than 18 months old I wouldn't even normally start to suspect PSU as a culprit unless you get freak crashes and the like). P.s. Had a 600W Seasonic in mine when I bought it 3 years ago and it has been fantastic. Might not be enough for a juicy, overclocked, machine with multiple heavy graphics cards but for a single card system it's awesome and I'd get another. MackTheKnight Posted August 6, 2010 Posted August 6, 2010 Bad sound drivers can also cause stutters. I was going to mention that one as well - I have a creative audigy ZS sound card and when I originally switched to windows 7 64 bit, the drivers from creative caused alot of stuttering issues in all my games, especially DCS. I installed the latest beta drivers and it's been smooth as silk, ever since... -Mack
