Hi,

I really hope someone can help me here. I have made a simple mission with a column of hostile vehicles and a JTAC. I sign in with the JTAC and requese a 9 line brief. He supplies then kindly me with the location of the hostiles. I create a new waypoint using the CDU, however I am stuck because I can not for the life of me create a steerpoint from the waypoint.

I have used the following procedure to create the waypoint

Select the Waypoint page on CDU

Select the Copy to available mission point (LSK R7)

Enter the elevation of the new waypoint in feet using the keypads/scratchpad and press the LSK next to the elevation field (LSK L5).

Change the co-ord system from L/L to UTM (LSK R9)

Enter thegrid reference of the new waypoint using the keypads/scratchpad and press LSK9.

4. Label the WP TARGET1 LSK next to the name field.

This process successfully stores the WP to the database, however when I try to set the new WP as a steerpoint I get stuck.

I set the AAP Page selector to STEER, this displays the STRINFO page with the current steerpoint selected.

The manual states that I should be able to change the steerpoint to any of the stored waypoints. However I cant seem to use any of the suggested methods, for example

Enter the waypoint name or number, well, I type the TA and TARGET1 appears in the scratchpad, but for the life of me I cant seem to enter it.

In addition the manual states on page 448 that 'With the HUD as SOI, you may also press DMS Left and Right to cycle through waypoints' this dosent seem to work either.

can anyone shed some light on this for me.

More to the point am I going around this the wrong way? is there an easier way to locate targets given a grid reference.

Thanks for any help

I'm curious about this stuff too. I've been doing the Training Range mission which has multiple targets and a JTAC. I got the waypoint punched in and tried to set it to my Target Point (the bullseye) and couldn't get that to work.

I cant help but think there must be a quick way of entering a co ord like MM271493 into the UFC and pressing one button which adds an icon to the TAD.

Make sure you have the STEERPT dial set to MISSION. Or, enter the new WP into the FP and set STEERPT to FLT PLAN and set the new WP to SPI.

Works fine here.

But like Nate said, easiest way to to just make SPI the datalink target location (red triangle) on the TAD.

Thanks Nate and Wags, I'll give both a go later

I haven't a clue about the CDU, but you can use the TAD and the datalink to get your target.

After you have performed the 9-line readback the JTAC will send a digital 9-line and the target position will appear on the TAD. You can now hook this target and set it as SPI.

Nate

OK. I'll have to read up on this. Other than that though can you tell me if what I did was correct?

I got the nine line and shoved the coords into a waypoint. I then set this as the target area. I ended up also having to make it a flight point because I couldn't get my FLIR to align to it as a target point, not quiet sure how to. Anyways I aligned the FLIR and started heading to and FP called "IP" because the guy giving me the 9 line said "IP: Ford". I assumed this meant to come at the target from the IP flight point, so I did. He requested mavericks but since I couldn't get that to work I went in with guns. I was promptly told to break off and that I don't have clearance so I went back to IP, which was also the Egress point if I'm reading this correctly. I then went back from IP to the target area, but this time got my maverick to lock. I launched, watched the missile hit the tank, and went back to IP.

So is this how we're supposed to do it? Fly to the initial point, fly to the target area, kill, fly to egress? Do I need to continue coms or anything with the guy or just keep hitting targets until he says something?

You need to continue communicating with the JTAC, as for all the waypoint entering and stuff I just don't know enough about the CDU to help you.

OK so if I'm getting this correct I'll call the JTAC up to say I'm available. JTAC sends me a 9 line via radio. I then send him a message back and he tells me what ordinance to use. Do I call him back again to get the digital 9 line?

BTW is there a forum post or something I should be looking for to get this information? I just didn't notice anything and I'm trying to be good about reading the stickies before asking too many questions.

You must call him back to confirm you have understood his 9-line, he will then give the Digital 9-line and then ask you to report when you are on IP. He will then mark the target, if applicable, and give further target info and finally give permission to attack IIRC.

OK cool. Sounds like I was skipping some serious communications steps. I'll have to get back up there and try it out again. I've still got to figure out these controls better as well. Sometimes I do stuff with the China Hat and nothing happens even though the instrument is selected. Guess that's more RTFM though. Thanks for the help, can't wait to pop that tank again! This time though I'll have to be less frantic with that Steer Point button. I was flipping through points and moved my head, accidentally killed the left engine with that fire pull bar lol.

For those of you who wish to try it yourself, there is a JTAC in the shooting range mission, I tried it yesterday and it works ( but I had to remove the wingman, and change my skin to the first skin to get rid of the low fps, ED probably knows about this bug? ) but you cant hear the guy, only read, but still everytning works, just read up on the TAD JTAC page in the manual so you know what to do, its actually very easy, just click wilco on the TAD and select the red triangle on the TAD as SPI :) This is a huge step into turning the labels off if you still have them on IMO No more wondering where the heck they are :)

I cant figure out how to set anything as SPI from the TAD. Maybe im stupid. But on the TMS DMS etc page for different modes it says you can mark as SPI or something with TMS Up Long i think it is. But i cant get it to work.

I take they you can mark SPI with the cross hair you can slave around right?

Oh also on the JTAC mission, you can edit Wags mission and look at his setup, just copy it and create your own mission. I had to set the freq to 131 MHz instead of the 10MHz in Wags mission, i couldnt get the radio down that low in freq.

But otherwise then that it works fine, just no voice for radio coms.

If i may ask a question. What is the X on the HUD over the JTAC, I also see it in the TGP screen. I guess its to signal its a friendly unit but how do it work(Is it a IR signal? radio signal or what). I tried doing some searching in the manual but couldnt find any info. Can someone explain it or point me to a page in the manual. I did read up on using the IR strobe locater but not sure how it works. Also the LSS search function for the TGP dont to much when i created the JTAC and directed him to say i should use LGB's. Shouldnt he be able to mark something for me?

But maybe its not implemented or i did it all wrong which is properly more likely :P

Yes, should work, works everytime for me, you have TAD as SOI?

It only works on already existing symbols though, on the TAD I mean. You cant just point the cursor on the ground in the TAD and make that SPI (I think, I hope im not giving the wrong info here) you have to put the cursor on a symbol, like waypoint or red triangle, and hook it first with a short TMS fwd, then make SPI with long TMS fwd. For making some random point on the ground into SPI, use the TGP for that. GL

Actually you can.

Make TAD SOI, then slew cursor to a point on the map (does not have to be an icon) and TMS right short to designate. (In the manual TMS right short is labeled a 'Mark Point' but it seems to create a SPI at the location )

Hope this helps
