Poor mans FERMI: NVIDIA 460GTX

Hey guys.

 

Having problems with my old 9800GX2 card for some time now, it seems to start a slow death with on screen artefacts and sometimes not being recognized by the system anymore (running on generic driver).

 

So today I placed an order for an EVGA GTX 460 1024MB SUPERCLOCKED GDDR5 EE (external exhaust).

 

I chose this over the 580. I dont feel like blowing more than 1/3 of my salary on one. :) Anything above 250€ for a GFX is obscenely expensive for me let alone 400€+.

 

This 460 seems to be the sweetspot for features VS price. Anyone else has one? What are your experiences VS your older card?

 

Im picking mine on Monday.

EVGA offer a good deal on warranty and also nice overclocking tools. I'm currently still with my EVGA GTX260 so I can't comment specifically on this GTX460 card. But the GTX460 offer some great value for money.

 

Any half powerful graphics card should come with an external exhaust. I hate the idea of toasty graphics cards spewing all that hot air into the case.

You are jumping two generations so you will be in for a nice surprise. Run a mission now with framerates on. Then repeat with new card.

Hope so, :) the graphs at TOMSHARDWARE show the 460's neck on neck with my 9800GX2, but being single chip I expect no SLI compatibility problems with LOMAC and DCS, so I expect to take full advantage of single chip speed.

 

I will never buy dual chip setups again. I only bought the 9800GX2 because their price droped to half at the time and I jumped ship.

 

when DCS: fighter comes along however I will have a high end setup. Think PCI express SDD and a higher end single chip GFX. I make my rigs to last. This ones 4 years old and doesnt deserve a 580 in it. Want it for at least another year (by that time the work on next DCS title should be well advanced).

Why would you want to buy something that is basically the performance as your old card? Looking at the charts on tomshardware, it should give you a little increase. You can't always trust those reviews, since everyone's computer is different.

The 460 GTX is a great card. In fact I considered that same EVGA card for my rig but since I run at 2560x1600 ill need something like a 580/6970 for my next upgrade.

 

SLI/Xfire do nothing for DCS/FC. Your 9800GX2 is effectively an 8800GTS when playing DCS so a 460GTX would be a big upgrade.

 

Personally I never have and never will do SLI/Xfire. I just dont see the point.

 

Report back with results! Im very interested to see if DCS WH is more graphically intensive over BS.

I only want a replacement card, not an upgrade. Anything bigger would make the rest of my PC lag behind it. Im saving for a new build later on.

I think that the GTS450 was the replacement to the G92 series of cards such as yours. However there isn't much of a jump in price from these 450's up to the GTX460 so I would stick with a GTX460 in your old rig and buy a nice shiny fast new generation card when it is time for you to build a completely new machine. :)

Even better, when arriving at home there was a mighty big package waiting for me. It was the Warthog HOTAS.

 

All of this in just 30 minutes.

 

Now I feel more guilty than sleeping with my ex and the "other" at the same time. :D

So how was the upgrade? Hopefully your WH doesn't die.

Didnt have time to test it yet, I did do a run on 3Dmark, and it showed better FPS, though, since my old GFX could not engage 3D mode, couldnt test that before the change for comparison. Cant remember the values either from when it was still working. Also made a run on 1 mission in DCS A-10 but didnt see the difference. Same 18 FPS on ground.

 

The bigger difference are comung for my FPS's and RTS games.

 

The WH is going to stay on the crate untill such time Thrustmaster releases the fixed FIRMWARE. Not that I had much time to play with it yet anyway.

I'd like some advice on this card. I can get the Gigabyte Super OC GTX 460 1GB for £154 on eBuyer. that strikes me as a really good price. However, should I buy this now, or wait until about 27 December when I plan to really go for my newbuild?

Have i missed something here? New firmware. Ive had mine from day one and no issues. I did hear that a few guys had vanishing throttle issues. Is that what you are afriad of?

Fair enough. Will take the advice. Was just curious as to what people would recommend, with that particular model currently enjoying a price cut. Here's hoping for more late next month.

I like your choice of card too. :thumbup: Looks like a great bang for buck value buy and I read an excellent review on it a couple of weeks ago at Hexus. Just make sure the length of the card (242mm) won't cause any problems in your case because it is a bit longer than a stock GTX460.

Planning on getting an Antec 300. I imagine it'll be a tight squeeze, but can't be sure. Never built before.
