BOPrey Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 http://home.lyse.net/startsiden/F-16ALASKACAP.wmv Wish ED allow third party addons - at the very least for maps and terrains.
SUBS17 Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 That looks nice but I would very much prefer it if ED created Terrain addons and sold them separately. That way, we're all playing on the same field, and ED makes more money from it. The bigger the universe, the greater the fun. [sIGPIC] [/sIGPIC]
Guest Cali Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 WOW that is SWEET!!!!!! ED needs to talk to those guys now!
britgliderpilot Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 Mmmmn . . . . I'm a little unconvinced. All photo-realistic scenery looks great at high altitudes. I haven't yet found one that looks good low down. I don't know whether the shadows are real-time or part of the textures, that water doesn't look up to much, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of trees and buildings . . . . . and did they make the 3d mesh for the scenery, or take it from the stock FS2004 version? Actually building new terrain to the detail of Lomac's is A Bit Tricky. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v121/britgliderpilot/BS2Britgliderpilot-1.jpg
rekoal Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 HOLY SH** thats awsome!, but would it have a FPS drop? rekoal

Actually building new terrain to the detail of Lomac's is A Bit Tricky. Georender (http://georender.org) is the company that made it and there is still more to come. There are some videos that are really down low. For the water, it look exactly as in RL (I have flown over that area a few years ago on a GA aircraft). The 3d mesh I believe has resolution of 0.6 meters (not the default FS2004 mesh which has a resolution of 1000 meters).
Pilotasso Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 There was indeed a loss of resolution at low level but was not too serious. This terrain Is AWSOME in all respects. The resolution and the geological detail left me breathless! Why is it that all the best addons get their way to MS simulator...a toothless sim. I wonder why military jet sims dont get this popularity and expansions. .
airea Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 Especially, with the release of 1.2 and KA-50, good resolution terrain would be of great importance, as it would be impossible to fly at 5.000 m ASL with the chopper. Lock-on has great aircraft addons but it should be the time for som different and more realistic and more lively terrain...
Trident Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 The mesh is likely 19m res which is the maximum supported by FS, not 0.6 (the textures might be). I do agree that this mesh is what makes the difference though, and I'd love to see something similar from ED in future. Infact, the other aspects of ED's terrain graphics are so much better than in other sims that all they'd need to do is slap such a mesh and maybe 3d trees on their current work for it to be competitive for years to come (I don't see terrain geometry getting much better than 19m for lack of any readily available elevation data in higher resolutions). EDIT: as I said in that other thread, a decent FS mesh certainly puts the PS3 terrain demonstration video into perspective, this one definately falls in that category.
Kula66 Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 Couple of months ago I bought FS2004 and a couple of terrain packs ... and though it was c..p! As others have commented, down low it is dire (as is falcon) ... Installed it, fly few a few hours then uninstalled .... I've been spoilt by LO ... a work of art!
BOPrey Posted June 1, 2005 Author Posted June 1, 2005 Couple of months ago I bought FS2004 and a couple of terrain packs ... and though it was c..p! As others have commented, down low it is dire (as is falcon) ... Installed it, fly few a few hours then uninstalled .... I've been spoilt by LO ... a work of art! I agree it is a work of art. However, it is also more a work of art than reality. What ticks off the most is that, in order to make the rendered structures/trees/object better blend in with the textures, ED employed a "semi-see-through" method. Is there a way to disable that?
Kula66 Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 The see-through buildings seem to be worse in 1.1 than 1.02 IMHO ... never noticed in in 1.0x
