CPU Requirements

Hi fellow Flight Simmers!

I'm quite new to Flight Sims, I've only got about 3 years experience (I still can't start the KA-50 to save my poor life) and when I looked at the DCS: A-10C Warthog for Beta purchase, it said recommended specs were Core i7 950, 4 GB, and a Nvidia GTX260! Holy! Thats alot better then my system specs, and I quite worried if my system won't give good FPS. What is the regular FPS you get and with what equipment in the rig?

Actually, revalence, an i7-870 is pretty much identical to a 950 for performance.

The video card is very up to the minute, but if you don't mind me saying so, the chip is quite modest and with what we know of the CPU intensive nature of flight sims, if he's getting decent performances then there is hope for a lot more of us. But this is something that some of us who have been simming for a while discovered with the likes of FSX. Although, of course, on the whole the higher the spec the better the performance, this was not always the case. There were so many different set-up's, so many different permutations, so many types of other programme on the same disc, etc, etc, and all of these would have their effect in some way, shape or form. But there is something else that we can take from the FSX experience and that is that though the original release was an extremely poor performer on just about every system, SP1 made a huge difference. In other words optimisation can go a long way. THis is what I am hoping with the next patch.

Now you will all think this is silly, but I run the game quite well considering its a beta. Believe it or not, I can usually run in Medium settings unless we want to have a full blown war. then its down to all low settings.

 

And your setup blows mine out of the water. My setup is 7 years old and its been a year or two since my last upgrade. Please do not laugh too hard when you see my specs below. She is old, and I have been waiting on a sim that would make it worth my while to upgrade. Now I have found it! I love A-10C!

nothing to laugh about your system. up until a month ago i had a p4 3.2 EE with 2 gigs of ram and a Nividia GTX 7800 256mb. it ran FC/FC2 and Blackshark just fine. not great but quite ok.

 

If the system hadnt had died, i would most likely still use it to today.

Yes you do need the same card. If you had two different cards, you could use the weaker as a PhysX processor, but that's about all as far as I'm aware.

My rig is now eating A10C for breakfast all maxed out.

 

Just swapped in a GTX 470 and o/c big time toperform like 480.

 

Getting 60 FPS (capped) even through smoke.

got a similar rig as you mower but wouldnt say that it is eating it for breakfast. yes, i get 60fps and more at times but what also has to be said is that it does go down to below 10s at times and on average it would say (softfact!!!) that i get about 30fps.

 

now i am running everything at stock, no overclocking here yet

Mower, your rig is Blazing, show them how to OC Safely and with stable PC? they want to know!!!Cheers Jim, back to a-10, 40- 70 FPS average so far. Information is true knowledge!! :thumbup:

Hello NotiA10. Did you use CCC to Auto overclock your 5870 e6 card, ATI OVERDRIVE, works well and you still have control of GPU fan if needed for more cooling?:thumbup:

Hello Mower, You are overclocked to 3.6? plus GPUs, I am Stock at 3.6 with 5870's Auto overclocked with ATI OVERDRIVE, so, what is your true Specs?? Stable ones of course!! Are you driving 1 monitor or more?

I am stable CPU v 1.20, DRAM 1.65, RAM 2:6 ratio, everything else auto.

 

470 GTX 750/1500/1800, stock v. Stock is 607 core, 1280 shader, 1400 memory, temp 80'C at load.

 

The key to a successful o/c for me on the CPU side was not pushing RAM too hard, hence the 2:6 ratio rather than the usual 2:8.

well done Mower, my 2000mhz ram will inhibit some overclock of my 975, but have pushed to 4.4 and backed off for stability. Best overclock ram is 1600mhz, I have found out.. happy flying..:thumbup: Keep those GPU Temps in check!!! Jim

It could be that you two just have different standards since you just got your upgrade, or you guys are running different settings and missions. You won't see much difference between those two systems. Even stock, his CPU is only 270mhz slower than yours with turbo boost. Plus his 5870 is slightly faster than 470.

His 5870 is *not* faster than my o/c 470 if he is running stock. ;)

 

What is your mobo, what is your CPU v and are you air cooled? 4000 is a good o/c for the i920 if stable.

not a competion .. but my 5870/s at 1220 mhz, memory clock 300mhz, is faster!!!that just the GPU,2 of them in crossfire, I7975 at 3.6 cooled with asecek 240 to the processor. GPus, air cooled, but vertical MOBO. fan speed, 21%, temp 40C, x58 classified MOBO!!:book:

 

as long as we are getting the current worth of the beta 4, I dont care who is faster, hope others see this as well, If it works for you, it;s all good??? Cheers all, mach 4 is easy for me, but not necessary!!!

Well obviously the two 5870s in Crossfire is tons more GPU power than one 470, but he's also running Eyefinity, which is pushing a lot of pixels.

On OCing, please remember that mileage may vary. Chips of the exact same model may have varying OC headroom and you should ALWAYS do a personalized overclock of your system using careful planning and testing - never jump immediately to someone else's settings.
