This is how it's done. US/ Japan exercise? Russia just sends 2 planes to check it out. No questions asked. Well done.

Happens all the time, everywhere. In other news a Dog was found trying to hump a cat.

The problem is that the Dog or Cat's whatever you want, fly around without transponder at all, that means NATO jet's or US planes have to send the current positon of russian military traffic to the next radar station to corrdinate civil airliners around the blind operrating russian planes to avoid a close call with a B747 maybe, I dont know if we can call this as "well done". Espacially when you or myself in one of this airliners lol.

Well I like it that the russians take action don't use empty words, like "If you will shell us again, we'll send some planes". In comparison to SK they afford it of course. And if russians did exercises in US back garden I would expect a similar reaction from them. (US)

... I don't see why you're tying this back to SK ... this had nothing to do with SK, at least AFAIK, not to mention Russia made no threats to disrupt anything unless I missed it.

Not a big deal. You've made something out of nothing.

He did not say whether there was any interaction between the Japanese and Russian aircraft.

Russian tryied to trade some pissing poor vodka for some Sake tired of having to drink anti freezing SU fluids.

Unfotunatly US planes where around giving a No-go to the trade, there where willing to push some jack (Daniels) into the Russian, but Russian weren t willing to concede fluids as they still had to land. Poor puns not intended, but expected :D)

How is sending two ASW aircraft into international airspace "taking action", and what might they be "taking action against" considering that neither Japan nor the US have threatened Russia?

But I like the prompt russian response.
Response against what, exactly? A military exercise that doesn't involve Russia at all?

What's the chances of a Boeing 747 flying over an active training excercise?

You may as well ask what the chances of some random SAM exercise firing are of finding an airliner...

It sure is. Yankees = Friendly Fire R' Us. Don't blame me, the Brits told me. ;)

EDIT: So to sum up the opinion here... Bad Russia for sending ELINT cos teh Airliners will have to avoid it and the Dog should have used a shoebox.

Of course. The US has more planes in the air than any other country, so naturally the number of incidences is going to be higher. It has nothing to do with being a Yankee, it's just statistics.

Although I admit after watching one A-10 video.....how the hell do you mistake orange panels for orange rockets?

I wouldn't be tempting fate by having my B747 flying around a naval exercise. In fact I wouldn't fly a damn kite anywhere near it.

It's called a self-fulfilling scenario.

A couple factors:

1. I assume they weren't briefed on the orange panels (they were in fact likely used for air ID!)

2. You can't tell what they ACTUALLY are from altitude.

3. They were told after checking MULTIPLE times that there were NO FRIENDLIES in that area.

Self fulfilling scenario. Common sense goes out the window.

Either way, it didn't matter -what- they were, they were sitting on top of a convoy of armored vehicles in an area where as far as they knew there were no friendlies, and the iraqis still had some armor remaining. IIRC.

So this goes from Russia wanting to hang out during a US / Japanese exercise to friendly fire incidents in Iraq / Afghanistan?

Actually that particular friendly fire incident WAS pilot error because the pilots reported their position miles away from where they actually were. This triggered the whole "There are no friendlies in the area" thing. They were about to do positioning with artillery but before that was done they already engaged.

PS, the Chinese have done things like this before too, they have recently surfaced a submarine in the middle of a US Navy exercise, being able to get within torpedo range of the carrier at the center of the formation of ships sneaking trough all security.
