Ok so I got seduced by the dark side and bought a combat sim again :D

So i'll have to go get the Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog in the new year but which rudder pedals do you guys think are the best solution?

What about the new Saitek combat rudder pedals?

http://www.saitek.com/uk/prod/compedals.html

As their USB they should not conflict with the Hotas but I am aware I would not be able to use the TARGET software to program them.

Opinions please :D

Saitek can be very hit and miss, so as tempted as I was to wait for and get them, I went for 'tried and trusted' (or at least, 'tried and known') existing availability pedals instead. So I recently (about a week ago) got the regular Saitek pro flight rudder pedals, which are going to be around half the price of the combat pro ones.

I'm maintaining a couple of PCs at once anyway so if the new ones become a 'must-have' item, I can retire off these pedals to accompany the now-neglected X52, but probably not for at least 6 months.

That was going what was going through my mind at the time of purchase anyway, and now they've arrived, I might just extend the period for retirement to 18+ months (depending on how well these ones last). They're good enough so long as quality doesn't noticably deteriorate over time.

Actually turns out to be a good decision for me, as I'm a bit of a noob at pedal rudder controls it seems. I had ch pro pedals like 15-18 years ago - their current ones incidentally look no different other than for change from gameport to USB - but since then only used twist-stick style rudders, which of course I don't have anymore on a device like the TM warthog. I don't think I'd appreciate the difference between these pedals and 'better' ones anyway for a while.

Programming 3 axis and 0 buttons isn't really much of an issue, only reason you'd want to use any programming is to tweak deadzones (hopefully none needed though) or curves, rather than macro programming. I'm not bothering with any software at the moment.

I'm also saying all that, with the expectation that from a software perspective, the new combat pedals are going to be identical. What looks to be different about them is design and materials for the hardware and not their functions (though I'd hope for improvements in quality/precision and not just aesthetics for the price hike).

Agreed about hit-and-miss on Saitek. But personally I've had good use of my regular Pro Flight pedals. Had them for about two years now and the only issue I have is that I can't find a way to secure them to the floor other than resting them against my subwoofer. :P

Don't know about the Pro Flight combat pedals, but from pure appearances it looks like regular Pro Flight but with a slightly re-done styling and a few metal parts added.

Here my cent:

Saitek, don tknow but if i fail to port my TM RCS to the warthog its probably be my way, i would prefer combat.

CH and old thrustmaster Elite, to narrow unles you re a narrow hiped girl.

RCS thrustmaster elite, was used by the US Marine for training, its speak it all, but it has 3 drawnbacks, Gameport so it must be brought to USB in some way (unless you plan to use Cougar), not produces since probably 97 so you ll only find them on E-bay, and will probably have to be refurbished.

Simped, German company not cheap but very good quality

And if you are on the mood for big cash theres realsim, just 1500 USD the rudder system

I have been thinking of buying Saitek Pro flight pedals but can't test them before buying.

Can some of you who own them please answer this questions:

1. Do you keep (rest) your feet on the pedals all the time and does "resting" your feet on them press the pedals?

2. Does it move on the carpet?

3. I have read some reports of them "jamming" after awhile. Any experiences like that?

Thanks.

1. Depends on your arrangement and leg-room, you can/do rest your feet in the footwells all the time but if you have the leg-room then you'll only press them down when you want.

2. Mine do a little sometimes, but not by much, you can probably try and eliminate it by propping something between the pedals and the wall/fittings behind them, any movement they do isn't forceful enough to do damage, it's quite gentle if it moves at all.

3. Can't say, haven't had mine a while yet to fairly tell. Unless you mean after a while within a single gameplaying session, in which case, never had anything like that before but sounds like what happens when using the new BS trim method and not getting your device(s) axis back to center again. With these pedals and a TMWH, not had anything like that happen and I expect it's more prone on devices with jittery centers that need deadzoning.

Hey goldfinger.

I have the saitek pro pedals. I have had them for over a year.

It really depends on the type of carpet you got about the slideing issues. Mine do not slide allot but do a little. There are always little mods you can do to make sure they dont move.

Now when flying BlackShark I rest my feet on the pedals all the time. I have a little dead zone set so I do not notice any difference when a take my feet off them and then put them back on. Also there is a wheel that adjusts the tension on the pedals.

And finally I would say I use my pedals on a daily basis and have never had them jam up on me.

Hope this helps.

Just to add, they do come with velcro strips on the bottom. I just put a couple of strips down on my chair mat and they stay put, even during particularly difficult crosswind landings, snap rolls, and evasive maneuvers in the Shark!

Hey Goldfinger,

I have had my Pro Flight pedals for almost three years now and pretty much what Atomic and Topdog said is how they are. My two cents on the moving of the assembly is it only real draw back but if you can find a way to secure them or brace them against something, but IMO is not a big deal. I just position my feet closer to my body that way I have downforce on them, because I am on a hardwood floor.

I have had my pedals come off the their track twice since I had them. It wasn't during flight though. I usually rest my feet on them when I am doing my normal computing when I havent moved them off to the side. It was my fault that they came off track, cause I may have been a little excessive in the resting of my feet. But it is a easy fix, just pull the 10 or 15 screws off the bottom cover and put the trains back on the track essentially. what happens is they just get twisted off the rails at the stopping points. Reinstall the cover and screws and your all set. Like I said it was excessive/quick movement that made them jam.

Hope this helps,

Scout

I just use my racing wheel clutch and throttle pedals for the rudder functions- it works much better than the keyboard or twisting stick!! ;-)
