HotelAlpha Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Hi all! I know, threads like this one are not new, but having read all similiar topics I dare to ask for your opinion. Current system: Core2Duo 3Mhz Geforce 8800GT 4GB RAM Windows 7 64bit DCS:A10 runs fast enough in most situations (I insist on high visibility ranges for landscape and objects, compromise on AA etc. is ok). It gets stuttering when Maverick and (to a lower degree) TGP images are on the MFDs. Do you think it would pay off for me to invest in a GTX460? Or is that nonsense with the current CPU? What do you think, gents? Regards HotelAlpha
MTFDarkEagle Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 From hearing other opinions here, yes it would pay off. However, what I would do is upgrade your cpu/mb/ram (to i7, or the upcoming sandybridge platform) Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
Conure Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Hi mate, I myself have just bought a gtx 460, upgrading from a gtx 260...I'm running a Q6600 @ 2.6ghz with 4gb of ram...If you can wait til weds I can give you some FPS benchmarks between the cards - I believe my 260 is a bit better than your 8800 and so if I see a big difference, you should see even more! Conure Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Also after some weighing up of opinions, I believe the slowdown you get from using the cockpit screens is GPU related...The physics and model is simulated whatever happens, however what you see on those screens is directly related to rendering, which is a result of your gpu power...So I believe GPU makes the biggest difference there... If I'm wrong, somebody please correct me! EtherealN Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Not strictly true - the pod/mav screens are essentially another rendering of the entire scene that then gets pasted onto a flat surface, which does include most of the same CPU overhead as the general rendering does (GPU does the rendering, but the GPU has to be told what to render). Boulund Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 I have essentially the exact same system and recently had to buy a new card since my old 8800GTS burnt out. I bought a GTX470 to replace it and to be honest, it did not make a big difference in Warthog for me. Still, I could increase my FSAA a notch or two but the game is still slow in the same situtations (slow flying over towns with AI etc). Conure Posted January 2, 2011 Posted January 2, 2011 Ethereal, you are the kindest and most knowledgable forum member I've encountered. Infact, everything you've said to be has been absolute gold BUT... Please let me believe the new card I've bought will let me ascend to smooth fps heaven, just until Wednesday :) Intel i7 6700k, Asus GTX1070, 16gb DDR4 @ 3200mhz, CH Fighterstick, CH Pro Throttle, CH Pro Rudder Pedals, Samsung Evo 850 SSD @ 500GB * 2, TrackIR 5 and 27" monitor running at 2560 * 1440, Windows 10.

EtherealN Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 Hahah, let me put it like this: it is only through sheer force of will that I don't buy something similar right now. So many other things that I need to spend my money on, but it's soooo tempting. :P [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Daniel "EtherealN" Agorander | Даниэль "эфирныйн" Агорандер Intel i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz, ASUS GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1GB, Samsung 830series 512GB SSD, Corsair AX850w, two BENQ screens and TM HOTAS Warthog DCS: A-10C Warthog FAQ | DCS: P-51D FAQ | Remember to read the Forum Rules | | | Life of a Game Tester
HotelAlpha Posted January 3, 2011 Author Posted January 3, 2011 Thanks for the info so far! I will try not to buy a new graphics card at the moment but instaid wait for the beta versions to come. Maybe things improve. Regards HotelAlpha
CAT_101st Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 I just bought a 465 SC, replacing my older 8800gt. I can now render the sim in all its splender but have fail to gain any FPS in fact I have lost FPS. Form all the gus in my groop only the ones with I7 are gitting good FPS in 64bit DCS. I max out around 32FPS and drop to 12 when firing the GAU-8 in 64bit and 32 bit is a total FAIL lock's up and crashes. New system time. I only wish I culd aford a I7 set up. I can afford the best AMD witch will only buy me the MB and ram for a I7 not the CPU. If Intel would bring there price down a little every one would buy them. Steel Jaw Posted January 3, 2011 Posted January 3, 2011 I went from a 9800gtx to a 470 gtx and it damn near DOUBLED my FPS and let me crank up the grafix.
