I have seen tutorials on how to use Steering Wheel pedals as rudder with the use of PPjoy and PPJoyJoy (utilities)...

I think vehicle pedals would be very odd for controlling the rudder, though you could get used to it. The main difference is that when you push the left rudder pedal forward away from you, the right pedal should move toward you. Also, most pedals designed for cars have different amounts of resistance on the brake than the accelerator, which might make things weird. But again, you could probably become accustomed to it.

 

If you primarily drive vehicle sims and have less interest in flight sims, then it might make sense. However if you primarily play flight sims I don't think it'd be worth it. The rudder isn't used all that much, and a HOTAS will do far more to enhance your experience.

 

Do you already have a HOTAS of some kind? If not, that's where I'd start. The TM Warthog is fantastic but it's also quite expensive, so that's just a judgment call you need to make for yourself. Note that it doesn't come with rudder pedals, and the only additional axis is on a slider; you could use that for rudder/wheel control when taxiing but I think it'd be awkward for any other use.

 

IMO best things are, in order:

 

- HOTAS with enough buttons to control everything (even if you need to do double-up some buttons with a modifier button)

- head tracking of some kind

- pedals

IMO trying to setup throttle&brake pedals as rudder using PPJoy.... priceless if you want future psychiatric treatment and medication.. :D

Thanks for advice. However I will start by buying a better USB joystick with Rudder Axi( RZ axis) which I don't have currently. (I use keyboard for rudder and I only have 4 buttons to configure...)

 

Which one do you recommend? I don't need the latest one; just one with the 3 axis and slider for engine power...Around 50 euros should be ok...That will be a good start. And also a joystick with at least 8 buttons to configure.

I use my G25 pedals with no issues. If you set the brake and accelerator as combined axis, DCS picks it right up as a device you can map functions to. It's not ideal but fully functional straight out of the box. No need for PPJoy.

Purg, you don't even need to combine the brake and accelerator as combined axis....

 

Mavyalex, I setup my G25 recently to act as rudders. Clutch and accelerator are my rudder, and brake is... wheel brake.

I just used Xpadder to configure my racing wheel. First I created a profile that loads with A-10C- and then my accelerator pedal is programmed as 'X' and clutch as 'Z'. No further configuring required other than the initial setup within Xpadder. But once the controller is configured, you can create new profiles for any game you want it to load with. I also programmed the brake to work as the wheel brake. Basically, Xpadder programs your game controllers/devices to perform keyboard commands- so anything that has a keyboard or mouse command within the game- can be programmed. I used this same method to program an XBOX controller and the two Cougar MFD's to initiate A-10 keyboard/mouse commands and functions.

i have a logitech g27 and im thinking of using the clutch and gas pedals for rudder as they seem to have the same resistance.. just haven't got enough time to test them out yet

Why not just buy Flight sim pedals and a Flight sim joystick and skip the Ghetto riging?

 

Well, some of us don't have a fortune to spend on equipment nor the space to have both flight pedals AND racing pedals laying around- that's not including the PITA to swap them back and forth. Sometimes it is good to be able to make use of what you have, especially in this economy.

Exactly! That is why I chose the clutch/gas for the rudders with my Fanatec Porsche wheel system... those pedals have about the same resistance.

Wow, what a timely thread, as I was trying to solve EXACTLY this problem -- using my racing pedals as rudder and wheelbrakes in DCS. In my case, I wanted to do this because my CH Pro Pedals have been replaced in my cockpit with Fanatec Clubsport Pedals, which are much heavily and harder to move, making switching them out depending on whether I'm flying or racing a real PITA. I had puzzled over how to get them working for days now, and then came across this post. Problem solved!

 

In my case I used the clutch and accelerator as left and right rudder, and the brake as wheelbrake (setting the left rudder axis to 'slider' with deadzone 0, saturation X 100, saturation Y 50, and curvature 0, and then right rudder axis to same but also 'invert', as shown in link above) and it works perfectly.
