Critical Bill Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Just wondering what you pilots do when you want to voice report enemy fighters to you squaddies?? If your squaddies is at your wing things are easier, but if you don't know the exact position of you squaddies (when things get hot), how do you report the enemies position correct??? I use my heading and altitude to the enemy and radar distanse, elevation etc. Does anyone have a better method so my squaddies quickly find my target???
golfsierra2 Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 (edited) Best method would be to use a common known reference point, a Bullseye. You then report the enemy position like this [your callsign], Bandit bullseye 220 25, hot, high Means there is a bandit contact from bullseye 220 degrees, distance to bullseye 25 NM, he is approaching (hot) and flying high. A more broad way to tell you buddies would be [your callsign], Bandit bullseye northeast, range estimated 30, hot, high You should train this procedure first with GCI/AWACS support, later without. Geskes Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Handy mnemonic: BRAA Bearing, Range, (from bullseye but if talking to wingmen from own-ship position) Altitude, Attitude. I7920/12GBDDR3/ASUS P6T DELUXE V2/MSI GTX 960 GAMING 4G /WIN 10 Ultimate/TM HOTAS WARTHOG
Jinro Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Means there is a bandit contact from bullseye 220 degrees, distance to bullseye 25 NM How would you know the angle and distance from the bullseye if you aren't directly above the bullseye?
104th_Crunch Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 (edited) How would you know the angle and distance from the bullseye if you aren't directly above the bullseye? You must visualize it and then give an estimate. for example, you are west of BE by 30NM. You have a contact that is 70NM directly to your East Angels 30. So you know the contact BRAA from BE is 090 for 40NM, Angels 30, Hot. That is an easy example, if the contact is off to the North or South you have to give an estimate. You could also just give your BRAA to BE, followed by the contacts BRAA to you if you cannot give an estimate of the contact directly from BE. The thing that sucks about Lock On is the HSI will not update properly when you are in a combat mode (at least the F-15 will update range to a WP in the HUD, but not bearing). You must switch to Nav mode and loose your contact radar which is not always advisable. In A-10C /Falcon 4 you see how a modern avionics suite can actually show you your BE, so you don't have to manually figure it out. In fact you can place your target designator right on your contact and your display will show you bearing and range from BE! This is also a great feature of the LEAVU mod. golfsierra2 Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Requires a bit of math in your head. You know your own position to the B/E (hopefully), so you should be able to estimate a bandit's position in relation to the B/E. It hasn't to be exact, just give your buddies / playmates an idea where to point their radars. kind regards, Raven.... [sigpic]http://www.crc-mindreader.de/CRT/images/Birds2011.gif[/sigpic]

Vekkinho Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 You just yell out loud - BANDIT!!! or OMG it's a MiG, now we're dead! LOL! 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
FLANKERATOR Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Well explained and very good summary of using BE to communicate own position as well as bandit position. Jinro Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Ah, math.....one reason why I'll never be a real pilot :P 1
FLANKERATOR Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Actually it doesn't require any math...you just have to read your HSI and practise it a bit. Situational Awareness: https://sa-sim.com/ | The Air Combat Dojo: https://discord.gg/Rz77eFj
Kuky Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Ah, math.....one reason why I'll never be a real pilot :P it's simple math actually, you just have to be very quick to calculate it PC specs: Windows 11 Home | Asus TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D + LC 360 AIO | MSI RTX 5090 LC 360 AIO | 55" Samsung Odyssey Gen 2 | 64GB PC5-48000 DDR5 | 1TB M2 SSD for OS | 2TB M2 SSD for DCS | NZXT C1000 Gold ATX 3.1 1000W | TM Cougar Throttle, Floor Mounted MongoosT-50 Grip on TM Cougar board, MFG Crosswind, Track IR
Jinro Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Math gets complicated for me once you get over two digits....hah
Critical Bill Posted February 1, 2011 Author Posted February 1, 2011 Thanx for your responses. I will start practicing BE-BRAA :)
Case Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 If you are flying with wingmen it is easier to be very disciplined in flying combat formations, which makes calling out bandits extremely simple, as with a simple 10km wide spread the BRAA of a bandit will be the same for both pilots. It does not require a waypoint, it does not require switching back to nav mode and it does not require you to do any math during flight. Instead you can just read the BRAA and relay it to your wingman who can apply it instantly, while both can keep focused on the thing that really matters; killing the bandit. The hard part in using this is getting the discipline to fly a combat formation, but once you have this mastered, you'll be loving it. There are only 10 types of people in the world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't.
