GBS Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 I find if i have anything set higher than medium the game really begins to slow down. Not good with a simulation of this quality. I have the following: AMD 2.7 dual core 4 GB RAM gForce 9800 GTX+ card Are there any tricks or settings that might work best with my equipment? Thanks. Greg

Bodo Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 (edited) There comes a point where all you can really do is accept that the program you're running demands more power than your setup can provide. Tricks. 1: Overclock your CPU and possibly your GPU. 2: Configure the installation to a separate HDD, allowing windows reads and writes to happen to a different drive than the one you're running the game from, might help with stutters etc. 3. Make sure there are no third party applications that might be using RAM and/or CPU power in the background. 4. Use a 64 bit OS. 5. Make sure all drivers are up to date. 6. Lower the settings in game and be happy. Can't think of many more than that. Upgrading the GPU might be good but I went from an 8800GT to a 460, and although I noticed big improvment, the main benefit came from upgrading from a Core2Duo to a Quad Core, also running at a higher speed. MTFDarkEagle Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Sorry to say, but I think your system isn't going to run any higher than medium.. What OS are you running? 32/64 bit? Lukas - "TIN TIN" - 9th Shrek Air Strike Squadron TIN TIN's Cockpit thread
asparagin Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 At the moment, what works, is turning things off: start with civ traffic, textures on med, water on low.. for better performance with things high you will need some more GHz and eventually a better GPU. Agg Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Apart from turning things off or down, there isnt really much you can do without updating your current system.
Conure Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 (edited) Hi mate, before I upgraded... shadows to low Water low Scenes low Traffic off You'll still get a nice crisp cockpit and terrain, and it'll smooth out your FPS. Turn the ground tree distance and foliage stuff to lowest...To be honest, the game looks great with everything on low except textures - Consider the rest as unimportant eyecandy. Also, defragging makes a big difference to performance...Not sure why as you'd presume the game runs off of ram, but defragging my old rig gave me 6 or 7 more FPS! A substantial increase when I was getting 15... If we're honest with ourselves, this sim is first and foremost a systems and avionics trainer - that is perfectly fine with all low, bar textures. Bahger Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Cockpit res at 256 will buy you a significant FPS increase if you've set it higher.
GBS Posted March 10, 2011 Author Posted March 10, 2011 Thanks for the advice. I have a 32 bit Vista system. What card is considered the best out there at this time?
Sinky Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Thanks for the advice. I have a 32 bit Vista system. What card is considered the best out there at this time? You will get different views depending if people prefer Nvidia or ATI. Check out the new HD6990, that will run you up 550 quid though. You do not need a beast of a graphics card to run the game on high settings. Can you tell me how much RAM your current GPU has? Conure Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 The newest graphics card will be severely bottlenecked by your CPU and Ram! You'd be better off spending the cost of a top end graphics card on a mid range cpu/mobo/ram and GPU!
