The manual says that china hat forward short press while the hud is SOI makes the MAV SOI. I can't get this to work.

I stepped across this as well - not working...

It works. HUD must be SOI and Mav selected... then CHF.

So again - it didnt work for me. What I did (track attached)

Flew a training mission - just Mavs on board, tried to become better with the Mav seeker only; doesnt matter for this thread. After setting a SPI close to the targets, I slew my Mav seeker on them, forgot to select a profile, did load a profile, shot 5x RIFLE - then thought about trying this switching from the HUD as SOI, so I selected the HUD as SOI and my maverick (i.e. the last one) was active...as active as it could be and selected - pressed China fwd short -> NOTHING...

Maybe I am just forgetting something...

the interesting part is at the end of the track...

This is how I do it.

Press Master Mode Button to CCIP choose MAV with DMS and press CHF.

Right MFCD switches to Mav Page and is SOI.

It only works when the MAV page is not selected !

Interesting. Now the question is, how should it work as compared to RL?

That sounds odd now :D

Why would it make a difference in RL whether the MAV page is selected or not -> IMO it should work in all cases....

Because if you already got the MAV page selected it makes no sence, you could use Coolie Hat long instead of CHF...

Posted

Well, you can use the coolie hat to select the mav display even if it's not active just by cycling the appropriate MFCD, so it's not as if you couldn't just "use the coolie hat" anyway. Doesn't seem like a good rationale for violating the "principle of least surprise". i.e. what advantage does disabling the China Hat shortcut in the Maverick display is already active somewhere provide? Seems like a strange thing to do - it's not as if the function then gets assigned some other meaning in that situation... it simply does nothing.

Posted

And you are way quicker -> multi Mav attack on several markpoints. Cycle through the markpoints with HUD as SOI - switch to the Mav with the CHF that you would in the same moment use to expand the FOV (2xCHF short instead one Coolie Hat long and then CHF short) - I suppose you save more than 2 seconds...

That's the point. CHF gives you MAV page and SOI. With the coolie hat you have to cycle the pages first and then again press it long to get the same result. This is how the real thing works.

They didn't disable it. They built in the "Select MAV Page + SOI" shortcut. They didn't built in a "MAV SOI" shortcut because you can use the Coolie Hat for that. Edited by Migo

Not quite...

1) It should be disclaimed somewhere that there shouldnt be a MAV page on -> maybe I post this in the other thread about the manual improvement...

2) Far more important...although it's nice to have a shortcut for both, SOI and PAGE, it doesnt give you any benefit in quicklier selecting the MAV as SOI as compared to a Coolie Hat long...

So what is the purpose of this shortcut IRL, what situation can one think of where this attribute of the CHF is needed?

Maybe if you set a SPI via HUD if you unexpectedly observe a new threat and want to eliminate it -> then you can quickly go to the Mavs. On the other hand, NOT really handy, because usually the EO timer would be OFF at that time...unless you are lucky. If you had to wait then for 3 min to cool down, you have all the time you need for selecting mavs as PAGE and SOI.... :smilewink:

But the "select MAV page and make MAV SOI" functionality is a superset of the "make MAV SOI" functionality. In order to make the china hat fwd NOT set the Maverick as SOI if it was already being displayed, they would've had to make an extra check for that, i.e. instead of:

1. Search right MFCD for MAV, if not found search left MFCD for MAV.

2. If found, make MAV page active, and make it SOI.

they'd have to either:

1. Check if the active page on either MFCD is MAV; if so, stop.

2. Search right MFCD for MAV, if not found search left MFCD for MAV.

3. If found, make MAV page active, and make it SOI.

or

1. Search right MFCD for MAV, if not found search left MFCD for MAV.

2. If found, but it's already active, stop.

3. Make MAV page active, and make it SOI.

i.e. it doesn't seem to me like simply an ommission, but rather something that was deliberately done. But I don't really see the reasoning. You don't gain anything that I can see by not being able to use this shortcut when the MAV page is already being displayed. It makes things more complex for the pilot (shortcut only works if the page isn't up) and costs them a second or two waiting for the 'long' press of the coolie hat to register.

There's probably a rational explanation for it, but preventing the expected behaviour just because there's another way to do a similar* thing doesn't seem especially rational to me. Perhaps there was another function planned for this scenario so they left the switch free, but it never eventuated, or something like that.

* - I said similar because "hold the coolie hat left/right to make that MFCD the SOI if it can become the SOI" is actually a very different function than "make the MAV sensor the SOI regardless of which display it's on". In my mind this makes the "there's already a control to do the same thing" argument even weaker.

Your Mav is in a non-track state. Toggle to a tracked state with TMS Fwd Short. Keep on doing so until the crosshair collapses, indicating that the Mav is tracking - launch.
