Rather than using text for in-flight radio messages, I'm thinking of recording voice files for this purpose in missions I make (although my English accent is an immersion spoiler, so will need to recruit local Americans)...

What audio output format does the sim take? Where do they go (i.e. which subdirectory of the sim)? What PC software do you recommend to make these files, Audacity?

Thanks, as always, for the assist.

Use .ogg format. Just load them into the trigger (you get a browse button) and they will be automatically copied into the mission zip.

Thank you, I thought it might be .ogg. I will investigate software.

I was messing around doing the same thing and i used windows sound recorder and just converted the wmv file to a wav.

.wav or .ogg is what you need.

wavs are too big.

I don't know how the hell it did it, but with AVS Audio Converter, there is some kind of .wav file format (and here I thought all .wav formats were the same other than sample rate and bits per sample) that is ridiculously small. I'll make one and post the specifics in a bit. Anyway, it's MUCH smaller than .ogg. It sounds like crap (I think it was aliasing like crazy)... but it is still understandable. AND DCS can play it.

If I remember correctly, I think I got something like 10 seconds into like 3kB or less, which seemed impossibly small... anyway, I'll upload one in in a few hours. I don't think it was simply a very low sample rate setting either.

Point being... in general you are correct, but .ogg can sometimes be bigger than wav... alot bigger.

yup... audacity is the schnizzle.

great thing about it is you can use the plugins to massage the audio and make it sound like a radio. good stuff.

Now that is great! Do the plugins come with the freeware Audacity download or do they have to be obtained elsewhere?

Posted (edited)

they are free and there are many. It can be an undertaking to load all of them and explore them but you can make a recording of your voice, apply the filter to it and then undo it if you want and tweak it quickly.

Cool stuff once you learn it a bit.

I think I used the "Freeverb"plugin the most for my ARMA mission voices.

EDIT - Im not seeing a lot of plugins for free anymore... Hmmmmm. It still comes with about 20 filters (also called VST plugins). try it out and see... >>>>>> http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/ and get the Newer Beta Version (1.3 i think)

Many thanks for your help, jeffyd, rep inbound (for the second time today, I believe...)

As for stoner JTACs, well, I won't be recoding JTAC, it's all scripted. But it would be interesting to make a CSAR mission with a downed female pilot on comms. Can't recruit the wife, she's English too, with an accent that makes Helen Mirren sound lower class.

You don´t neccesarily need a plugin to let your recordings sound like radio messages. Audacity has a built in noise tool where you can apply different kinds of noises to your recording. Another method is to add the "athmospheric" soundfile which you can find in the DCS A-10 sounds folder.

I might be able to help you out with the female voice. I recorded voice for the A-10A addon for FSX.

thanks for the rep!

Audacity has a "remove that limey accent" filter too LOL.

I usually use 2 filter passes, I will lower my voice and change the tempo as i see fit, then Ill use one of the complex filter to add noise and "wetness" to it. Dammit I wish i could remember what filter i used.

just try to keep you .ogg file sizes small otherwise your mission will take 10 minutes to load.

PM me if you want those other VSTs

Thanks everybody! I'm hoping to master this without too much agonising, as I'd rather concentrate on the sim than Audacity but I do want to do voice comms in missions and I don't want them to sound unfiltered as this would be an obvious immersion spoiler. I do not yet fully understand what an Audacity staffer advised on a thread I started about this in their forum:

You can start by applying the equalizer tool in the "telephone" setting: drop everything below 300 and above 3000. There may even be a pre-baked filter that does this.

Then apply Effect > Leveler about three times at maximum compression.

However, I'm a quick study and I'm sure I'll figure it out after an hour or two of fiddling about with the program.

Meanwhile I will look for the "Freeverb" plugin as this might be a one-stop solution.

Rehtnap, thanks! I might well take you up on this. It would add significantly to the "texture" of a mission if a female voice other than Betty were incorporated, especially from someone like you, who could deliver mil-speak with confidence.

Here ya go, proof that .wavs can be smaller than .ogg:

Using AVS audio converter, and the "MS GSM 6.10" codec, here is a truncated Russian national anthem in .wav that is like 1:15 long and is only 165kB. I had to zip it to attach it here. Even if I double the sample rate, this is still smaller than a similar .ogg.

Is there anyway to make custom voice sets? To replace or add to the default text to speech voice?

I'm not talking about pre-recorded, scripted voices, but the voice set which does all procedural coms.

OK guys, this is a good find. An Audacity forum mod explained to me -- with helpful screenshot -- how to customise a profile in the Equalizer effect that does everything I want -- i.e. convert a voice recording into a radio comms soundalike -- without having to use further plugins. And in the 1.3 Beta you can save this profile; I have named it "Radio". You then apply Effects/"Leveller" 3x to the file. Result: An easy two-step process for for conversion of voice files into a consistent "radio" output format!

Here is the link, just scroll down.

Tyrspawn, you make a good point. It's always going to sound a little odd when the automated pilot's voice for scripted dialogue sounds different from the supposedly same pilot's voice in user-made radio message voice files. Haven't a clue how to address this, though.
