genbrien Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Hi! I'm questionning myself and my credit card to what new CPU will I buy ?!:music_whistling: :D I'll overclock it for sure, so the difference in mhz between them dont bother me. It's more about the cache MB. Is 2mb more(for the 2600k) worth 100$ ??? If I'm only going to see a 1-2fps gain than I'll save the 100$..... And also, why my Q9550 has 12mb of cache compare to the 2500 6mb and 2600 8mb??? Do you think that getting 9 women pregnant will get you a baby in 1 month?[sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Mobo: Asus P8P67 deluxe Monitor: Lg 22'' 1920*1080 CPU: i7 2600k@ 4.8Ghz +Zalman CNPS9900 max Keyboard: Logitech G15 GPU:GTX 980 Strix Mouse: Sidewinder X8 PSU: Corsair TX750w Gaming Devices: Saytek X52, TrackIr5 RAM: Mushkin 2x4gb ddr3 9-9-9-24 @1600mhz Case: 690 SSD: Intel X25m 80gb
EtherealN Posted March 24, 2011 Posted March 24, 2011 Well, the differences between them aren't just the cache, the 2600K also has hyperthreading and the series 3000 iGPU, while the 2500K (being an i5, not i7) has no HT and series 2000 iGPU. In practice though, for most games, you will not notice any difference at all, including DCS. And it's not like you'll want to use either iGPU - indeed, if you use a P67 motherboard (like I do) you are unable to use the iGPU. The i5 2500K actually has just as much cache available as the Q9550, since the latter is actually not really a quad-core; it's two dual-cores in the same package so q9550 cache is 2x6MB, not 12MB. the i5 2500K will absolutely annihilate the Q9550. As far as value goes, my recommendation is the 2500K. The chances of seeing a difference between 2500K and 2600K are miniscule - it's mostly the type of scientifical computing where extra logical cores from HT is useful, video encoding and such things. EtherealN Posted March 25, 2011 Posted March 25, 2011 And are you satisfieid with your Sabertooth ? Fairly satisfied, though I should have given it's so-called heat shroud a closer look before buying. It's made for use with a specific type of CPU fan/heatsink assembly, and since I have water I needed an extra 50x50x10 fan. I've heard very good things about the P67 PRO's and Deluxes from ASUS though. They're definitely worth a look as well. Giantsfan24 Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 If you're going the K series, like me, do yourself a favor, and get a good aftermarket cooler. I have a hyper 212 and i can do 4.5ghz primed under 60C. And remember, prime 95 taxes your cpu more than any game ever will. With stock heat sink fan, it was getting into the 90s(NOT GOOD). A 212 only cost me $25 after a $5 rebate. Great deal. Check out neweggs reviews. Oh, I recommend the 2500K. Games don't use much HT and if you're going to overclock, you'll pass the 2600k stock speed anyway.

Madman777: have you played DCs a-10 with an older CPU than your 2600k? If so, what was it, what how much FPS did you gain Yes sir, I played both Blackshark and A-10C with the following; Q6600 @ 3.2Ghz 4 GB RAM 40GB SSD 8800GT Windows 7 I got about 20-30 FPS, on low settings mostly (A-10C). During a campaign mission, FPS was generally below 10, when near the target area. With 2600K @ 4.8Ghz I'm getting 3x the FPS. During a campaign, with TGP on and lots of action going on, FPS will dip to 28-29. That is the lowest I've seen it. Even at 4.0Ghz, I was seeing 50-60FPS. These CPU's are so easy to overclock so it doesn't make any sense to go below 4Ghz anyways. i7-12700k, 32GB Ram, RTX 3060 12GB, TrackIR 5, Lots of SSD Space, etc etc DCS World - All the cool modules

BUT, when I look at other aircraft, especially other A-10C's, it drops to 17-20FPS. Only when I'm looking at other wingman. Soon as I look away jumps back up to 30-40FPS. This happens during the Devils Cross Campaign. You need a super computer to get high FPS on the ground when looking at those other beautiful A-10C's. i7-12700k, 32GB Ram, RTX 3060 12GB, TrackIR 5, Lots of SSD Space, etc etc DCS World - All the cool modules
