i currently have an e8500 dual core at 3.2ghz... will a10c utilize more than 2 cores if they are available?

From the FAQ Sticky at the top of this forum:

"Q: Does DCS: A-10C use all cores on my CPU?

A: Not fully. It does include the new sound engine which operates in a separate thread, and does take advantage of some DirectX threading features when running on Windows Vista or 7."

great - so a faster dual core trumps a lower speed quad.

thanks

That's the exact reason I am just staying with my E8400 when I bought my two extra monitors and a new video card to run Eyefinity the other day. Upgrading to 4 cores for the purpose of seeing performance in this game doesn't really make good sense to me.

However, I do plan on overclocking mine a little to about 3.6-3.8. If you unfamiliar, the E8400 and 8500 run off of 45nm technology and with a good aftermarket cooler, are OUTSTANDING at being overclocked a little. These chips even come from Intel with a multiplier built into them for the specific purpose of people overclocking them. My stock speed is a 3.0, and people often run them at 4.0+ just with an air cooling system. There is a reason these chips still go for $160+ on newegg and everywhere else. They are the best dual core chips that can be had and still have some life left in them as far as performance goes.

Quad core support please >_>

<_<

Good luck with that.

On the other hand, the newer gen chips give you more performance per cycle, so it's not like a 4 GHz core 2 can trump a lower clocking sandy bridge.

Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two.

I totally agree with you there. My simple point was that it's not really an "outdated" chip as of yet. I wouldn't buy one if I was in the market for an upgrade, but I am happy at this point with keeping it.

From our standpoint(ye is probably in the same boat I assume), a chip upgrade will also cost us a new MB and memory. The E series still runs on a 775 chipset. I can't even get up to a I series without upgrading the Mobo. Granted, in my case, the motherboard will accept a quad core chip...but nothing that would really be in terms considered a step ahead of a E series with a small clock. I ran some numbers the other day, a new setup would run me in the $400's for SB chip. When I really put it to thought, I don't think that $400 would get me a $400 performance upgrade in terms of DCS. That and ARMA are my two main performers on my box, so it didn't make much sense to me. Everyone has their own opinion on it though, mine is just one of them...

I was also curious about the performance if i went from a dual to a quad.

After reading this topic, i will stick with the computer i have now.

Everything depends on how one values one's money, of course, but after moving from 4GHz e8500 to 4.4GHz Sandy Bridge I can say I do greatly enjoy 60FPS with all settings maxed. :P (Though okey, in windowed mode I do go down to around 40 when low over Batumi.) That comparison does rely heavily on me also having upgraded the GPU though, so it's not really a fair comparison. But don't underestimate the possible gains from the C2D-SandyBridge switch - it's not only extra cores for the OS to live in, it's also integrated memory and PCIe controllers which adds it's own benefits.

But obviously, even then it's very much a question of how one values those 400 dollars. I'm just a total nerd and will eat noodles for a month if it means letting me buy some new gadget. :P

Won't you get sick of noodles though EtherealN at the end of the month :)? Though having said that I probably would do the same if the situation really calls for it. Something that hopefully will never happen :).

Noodles, yeah... Probably. But as it stands right now I have like... two... different foods I make when home anyway, just out of habit, so it wouldn't be a dramatic change. :P (Pasta with Meatballs and Double-Egg sandwiches being the two.)

But anyway, guys, you should remember that less games than you might think actually makes use of four cores. For example, UnrealEngine3 games use two. (I don't know about UE 3.5.) And quite often games that use four won't saturate the extra cores anyhow (Cliffs of Dover, Rise of Flight, etcetera) meaning that you aren't scaling up linearly with those extra cores.

For myself, my chief enjoyment of having a 4-core is either when running Folding@Home (8 threads running as I type :) ) or through allowing greater multitasking. For example, play simulator on one screen, watch AlJazeera stream on the second stream. Such things - you basically end up being able to almost completely ignore background processes while playing, which is a great convenience.

Yeah, at the moment that is certainly one of the uses of more than dual core CPUs. That is until more and more games use more and more of the extra cores.

Why aren't you running the GPU-driven version of folding@home? Smokes any CPU by a large margin.

I got huge improvement in fps by upgrading from E8500 to i5 2500K. MHz is about the same with both of them (3.16 vs 3.3). Just ordered GTX 570 for 262e and we'll see how much performace gain I get with it. :) Using GTX 260 for now.

I'm running both, but the SMP client really was the one that was relevant to this discussion. :)
