bloomstomb Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 Hey guys Im not clear on why we need anchor points? Why not just use waypoints? Ok from what I understand, a steerpoint is a waypoint that you have selected on your hud. It seemed kind of unnecessary terminology to me but what the hell. And then theres anchor points. Now what the heck is that good for? Thanks. Signed still quite Noob.
cichlidfan Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 pg 458 Also referred to as a ―Bullseye‖, an Anchor point serves as a common geographic reference for a mission amongst friendly forces. It does not have to be a target, it is just a reference point for the mission. Zenra Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 An anchor point, or "bullseye", is used to help hide your location, and the locations of other friendly assets, from a listening enemy. Typically a common anchor point is designated for all friendly assets in a battle plan. AWACS and other units can then call out the location of spotted enemy units relative to the anchor point anonymously, for example. If AWACS instead called out the location of, say, a Mig-29 group relative to your location, it would be the same as AWACS telling the enemy pilots YOUR location. Frostiken Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 Thankfully very little seems to involve the bullseye in-game. In Falcon 4, wrapping your mind around managing bullseye heading, your own heading, and distances is frustrating as hell. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Hey Frostiken I agree mostly with your point, but you are maybe not taking into account the radio call outs that give bullseye calls to locate both Air and Ground units. These usually come from nearby friendly assets over the guard freq, or whatever freq that the mission designer set as the Bluefor frequency. Now these calls are not Mission Critical, but it can keep you from overflying a AAA/SAM asset that was not on your brief. The OFFSET function of the CDU really makes turning those calls into something that can increase your situational awareness. There is a OFFSET tutorial in my sig if you want to check it out. *Oh also, the TAD has a few HOOK settings that can really make the Bullseye Calls a lot more manageable. Frostiken Posted May 10, 2011 Posted May 10, 2011 (edited) There's radio chatter on the Guard frequency? Guard is for emergencies :o I got my pee-pee slapped for accidentally broadcasting on Guard :p Additionally, this radio chatter appears to mostly be on the VHF AM radio, and some aircraft don't even have VHF radios... shouldn't this chatter be on UHF so it can benefit from, for example, KY-58 and Have Quick anti-jam? </nitpicks> :) Edited May 10, 2011 by Frostiken [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
shu77 Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 Actually I can see how it would be quite useful once there is Black Shark and/or FC2 integration. While you can send info to another hog relatively easily with the SPI broadcast, sending a target bearing to a Black shark or SU-25 would be a lot harder. Being able to provide a reference from Bulls eye (which the TAD will do very easily) will allow them to find stuff you spot. WarriorX Posted May 11, 2011 Posted May 11, 2011 "Radio chatter" is really in the hands of the mission designer as to what frequency he decides to put the Bluefor on. I have mostly seen it on UHF 251.00, but there are some missions where I have seen it on other frequencies. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] "Is that you John Wayne?.......Is this me?"
