Ozz13 Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 I used an online print place, bestvaluecopy.com It came out quite nicely. If you do go with online print, make sure you double side the cover. That will assure the "fat margin" will be at the spine (or is it spline) Just in case anyone is interested, I used these settings and I'm pretty darn happy with the results. $56.50 and took less than 1 week (it can be done cheaper, I just wanted good paper). The only exception was they used a plastic "comb" style binding vs the spiral wire I had ordered due to the thickness..but it works fine. It's about 2" thick and weights about 6 lbs :D COPY TYPE - 1 of copies - 669 of originals - Black and White Copy Type - Double Sided - Page Size: 8.5 x 11 - Paper Type: 28# Hammermill Laser Bond - Paper Color: N/A FINISHING OPTIONS - Collation: Collated - Binding: Wire - Front Cover: Hard Front Cover - Front Cover Paper Type: 80 # glossy cover (only available for color copying) - Back Cover: Hard Back Cover - Back Cover Paper Type: 80 # glossy cover (only available for color copying)
Depth Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 Can't find a site like that in Norway, so do you know a similar site that delivers abroad? Edit: Or, someone in the u.s. could buy two copies and I'd buy one off you :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Ozz13 Posted May 13, 2011 Author Posted May 13, 2011 Not at all. I found this via a search on google like "online printing" or something close.
Depth Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Found a site delivering abroad but unfortunately in minimum 500 copy orders. So does anyone need 499 flight manual books? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Ozz13 Posted May 13, 2011 Author Posted May 13, 2011 I thought about having a 100 printed by a family friend in the print business. Though, I'm not sure what type of copyright infringement that would violate.
Frostiken Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 I got my printed at Kalkwik, came out very nice :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Ozz13 Posted May 13, 2011 Author Posted May 13, 2011 Yeah, I don't think you can go wrong with just walking into a print shop. I hate reading manuals on screen. I've got a laser printer which I've used to print Civilization and other thick manuals on which came out fine. Just 3 hole punch and put in a 3 ring binder. I just wanted a nice copy because I knew I'd be thumbing through it a crap ton. :D I live in a rural area with a limited variety of quality print places. I went online due to that.. but the $16 UPS charge wasn't cool. But.. it is 6 lbs.
EbonySeraphim Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Ozz13 -- I'm considering printing out a copy of the manual myself. How was the paper finish? Are the pages thick enough? I tried using the site (didn't push too far), and I didn't see where to specify the front and back cover separately from the rest of the print job or specify the binding. Can PM me your reply with the details on how you placed your order? Thanks! RigorMortis Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 Thanks for the suggestion. I have an older laser printer sitting in my back room that I never used once I got my all-in-one laser printer. I was going to spend $50 on a new toner but maybe go this route. It would be nice if DCS actually offered a manual for sale. I'd gladly pay $50 for a professionally color printed and bound one like Falcon 4.

From the research I did prior to ordering; 20# is the min weight you want to print double sided to avoid "blead" from the other side. I ordered the 28# paper and it's very quality. It will stand up to many page turns, it's very much like text book thickness. I'll p.m. details to you. I'm fairly sure you can reference my order number for what I ordered and you'll be very happy.

I printed my own at home but looked at what Staples and places like that use. The 20# would be like any cheap basic copy paper. The places that laser print for you use 28#. The difference in feel is quite noticable. It was a must for me, I used my Epson Inkjet and some of those image would bleed way to much on 20# paper. Damage Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 I'd love to own a printed hard copy of the manual but I'm having a problem pulling the trigger on a manual that cost more than the program. Also the manual seems to change a little with each new patch. Has anyone printed this out with their personal printer? Did it print the whole thing with one ink cartridge? -Damage [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Flight Box: ASUS P8P67 DELUXE, i7-2700K @ 4.5GHz, 8GB DDR3, Kingston 96GB SSD, EVGA GTX-570 HD 2560MB, Sony KDL-32BX420 32", 2 x Lilliput UM-70, Win7 Pro 64, CH Fighterstick, Pro Throttle, Pro Pedals
cichlidfan Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 I did, but not all at once, I printed sections as I started reading them. My printer has six cartridges (one per color) and over time I am sure it killed the equivalent of most of two black, and at leat one light cyan (the hud background pics) but it still came out to less than $60. That is also at full A4 (8.5 x 11) size which adds up after that many pages. I could not have spent the money for color and I thought I would lose too much going all greyscale for the pics. I kept wondering what it would have been like if I cut and pasted all the text only into Word and then printed that. It would have taken too long to find out. Bottom line for me is that a hard copy was a must for my way of studying.
