Laud Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 Wouldn't it been useful to also set the RWY heading into the HSI by the course knob? That way you would have waited for the course and heading needle to match, and you could have also used the course deviation bar to prevent offset. Leaving out the CDI was deliberate. Trying to bed in basic principles. Hope to address the CDI functionality in a different video. Laud Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 Rgr, looking forward to it! Just thought it would have been more intuitive, when all the needles point to a certain position for a certain reason... Fish Posted June 12, 2011 Author Posted June 12, 2011 Hey mate good work. Your next video should incorporate my ifr bad weather mission :) Cheers Cibit, Was in the process of ILS vid, but not happy until ILS is fixed. In the meantime BBQ has produced an exellent Vid (BBQ's Vid) of ILS as it is working now. Points made about ILS are well covered in other threads. My view, is in Real Life an ILS as it currently works would not be 'safe' enough to recover an aircraft in zero or near zero visibility conditions. Such an approach would have to incorporate a minimum visibility restriction for landing. BBQ did a fine job, but imagine the complications with wind and turbulence thrown in!! :pilotfly: Fish's Flight Sim Videos [sIGPIC]I13700k, RTX4090, 64gb ram @ 3600, superUltraWide 5120x1440, 2560x1440, 1920x1080, Warthog, Tusba TQS, Reverb VR1000, Pico 4, Wifi6 router, 360/36 internet[/sIGPIC]
spike2450 Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 Hi Over the last few days i've been learning the Tacan and ILS for the first time, this is the best i've found so far explaining a bit at a time i.e. The Approach worked really well. rep inbound  JaBoG32_Laud mention of setting the runway heading with the course knob, i take it u would set 090 (runway heading) and when the needles align turn in etc? Keep the videos coming. :smartass:
Laud Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 Roughly yes. But as the antenna is placed some meters off the runway you'd need to set some degrees offset to be guided straight to the treshold. Draw a line from the antenna location to the runway treshold centerline and measure the angle. That would be your offset that needs to be added to the real runway orientation. It's (TCN station) only gonna be a couple of hundred feet off the runway, and from a distance of say 5 miles, its as good as on the runway!. If u got no other navaids, as JaBoG32_Laud said use the offset rule (but u need to do the math based on the actual tacan station location. When your on the flight line, use ILS aids or Mark 1 eyeball for the final phase. effte Posted June 12, 2011 Posted June 12, 2011 For a VOR approach, you deal with the offset by flying a radial inbound which is not exactly aligned with the runway. The angle either has to be small, or it has to cross the runway centerline far enough out for you to line up and land safely once you get the runway in sight. No reason for a TACAN procedure to be any different. Remember, you don't just go up there and find a radial on your own. The approach has to be published for you to fly it. In other words, the radial to fly will be given to you in the approach plate, and you just do what it says. ----- Introduction to UTM/MGRS - Trying to get your head around what trim is, how it works and how to use it? - DCS helos vs the real world.

But as long as we have no TACAN approach-charts we'll have to make just the best of it -> go and create an approach that we like. ...unfortunately... Maybe our squadron will provide TACAN approach-charts together with our VAD-Charts. Let's see...
