RodBorza Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 Firts of all, I looked at the manual and tried to do a search on this, but no joy. I'm having problems with Mk-82s Air. On the Smerch Hunt mission is that what you got and looking on the Profile Page, it says that the bombs are armed with only one fuse (the tail fuse). It says Fixed High Drag. Thus, I have two questions: 1) When releasing them at low altitude (500-1000 ft) they hit further away from the target. I 'm using CCRP mode (because for me it is easier and doesn't have much error due to pilot input), even so, the bombs don't hit the target. Is it because of wind? Even at this lower altitudes? 2) When in CCRP mode, sometimes I get an "X" over the smal solution cue. I couldn't figure out why, only that if I maintain a very stable and level flight then I can release bombs, otherwise in a dive or a silght climb I can't. I would like to know what are the conditions required for a sucessfull Mk 82 Air release. I could notice that changing the scape maneuver helps, but what other parameters do I need to change? This is an amazing sim! 'Nuff said!:pilotfly: YouTube: SloppyDog
RodBorza Posted June 19, 2011 Author Posted June 19, 2011 (edited) Will check out. Thx SlackerD! Edit: So, for 1), it is better to go higher tnah 1000' to use CCRP? I decided to use CCIP and I'm getting right on the targets, but still having problems with CCRP release. Edited June 19, 2011 by RodBorza This is an amazing sim! coolts Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 (edited) AIR's are the one munition I never use. I cant hit a football field with them. a mate i fly with, (ICE), can take off a T-80's top hatch with them, but i gave up. A video would be nice. It would be good to have complete proficiency in the munitions available, but IMO, low drag bombs leave you far too exposed so i prefer toss bombing if i have to go low with dumb bombs. I would expect fast movers to be using these if anyone, as screaming over the enemy at 600kts to drop Durandels in Falcon 4 is a far different matter to ''put-put-ing' over angry russians in an A-10 at 500ft / 300kts. Eggcake Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 I'm also having problems with the MK82AIRs. I also try using CCRP, because I don't want to dive at this altitude, but really no success. I have no problems at all with CCIP and MK82 though.
159th_Viper Posted June 19, 2011 Posted June 19, 2011 Quick test found a pretty accurate hit-rate I would have thought, keeping in mind that they are dumb-bombs: All targets destroyed. RodBorza Posted June 20, 2011 Author Posted June 20, 2011 SlackerD, I disagree. I don't think they spin at all. What you may be seeing is the efect of the wind on the ballute. which does moves a lot, but in the game doesn't. I really don't know what 's wrong with Mk-82 Airs in the sim. Maybe we are not employing it correctly, or it is not modelled correctly. I like to think on the first possibility, because we are either not considering the wind effect or droppingthem low enough. Phazon Posted June 20, 2011 Posted June 20, 2011 Glad to see I'm not the only one who has had trouble with Mk-82AIRs. Much appreciated if Matt could possibly make a short video to explain proper use? :)

Spectre_USA Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 In the 3 years I loaded `Hogs, never did an AIR or Snakeye. As mentioned previously, retarded bombs on the A-10, A or C, is, well, retarded! :D I did load quite a few of both RET's on the F-111, which was made for the type, or vice-versa. Speed of heat, hair on fire, thumb on the pickle button, once released, beat feet. Yeah, more of an Aardvark attack profile... [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] A tale of 2 hogs
159th_Viper Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 ....As mentioned previously, retarded bombs on the A-10, A or C, is, well, retarded! :D.... Speaking as a complete novice insofar as the ballistics of the AIR is concerned, but I would have thought that dropping a bomb from the Hog going at 340+ knots, low altitude and having the bomb fart a huge plastic bag/drogue chute at release would result in a wildly inaccurate/larger than normal CEP at the very best of times. Are there just not too many variables that effectively preclude it from being anything other than an area-effect weapon? Goodness knows I've tried, but putting an AIR down on the turret of a MBT is more of a miss and less of a hit at the best of times. That said, the scatter-gun approach does seem to work well if you have to go in hugging the deck. Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? Darklighter Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 How are you guys marking your SPI points when using CCRP? Through the SPI point on the HUD or using the targeting pod? I've noticed that marking the target with the HUD is not that accurate especially the farther from the target you are.
159th_Viper Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 ....Through the SPI point on the HUD or using the targeting pod? The TGP for the very reasons you mention. I've noticed that marking the target with the HUD is not that accurate especially the farther from the target you are. Hi Darklighter. For Mk.82 Airs I would go with the ol CCIP. For CCRP, the way I do it is, use the TAD target steerpoint or your manually set HUD TDC SPI as a ref to slave the TGP to get in the general target vicinity. Then, use the TGP to zoom in, switch to WHOT and look around for a target. Don't forget to zoom in farther with the WIDE/NARROW mode. Then make your newly found target SPI. RodBorza Posted June 22, 2011 Author Posted June 22, 2011 Testing and testing and testing again, I could found out this about CCRP employement: 1) You need to be low, very low. 1000 ft or less low; 2) You need to be fast, as fast as the Hog can; so a slight dive helps (very slight -3 alpha or less); 3) CCIP works better. For reasons I couldn't figure out yet, CCIP has a better chance of hitting that MBT turret than CCRP, for Mk-82 Airs. For Mk-82 in low drag configuratin, it is always a hit, being low or high up to 10,000 ft. Above this, the wind has too much influence and the Mk-82 low drag is only effective against soft targets, due to the blast radius. This is an amazing sim! 'Nuff said!:pilotfly: YouTube: SloppyDog

RodBorza Posted June 27, 2011 Author Posted June 27, 2011 Actually, I don't think you are doing that wrong. The case is, Mk-82 Airs suck. You are releasing them in CCIP mode, which is, by the way, the mode that I found them to get right on targets, or at least, near them. CCRP mode get them everywhere but the target. Also, you are in a dive, and very low (1000 ft or less). Well, that's the way you do it! This is an amazing sim! 'Nuff said!:pilotfly: YouTube: SloppyDog
