Not sure if someone posted this before, but at any rate, here it is.

Whoever programmed "snaps" into photoshop, I love you.

sadpandaissadabouteula.jpg

This is the 1:500k scale map. Well, I shrunk it down abit for the forums, since it is a 230 mb jpeg and with 16384x8192 dimensions.

If its ok for me to upload the one at full size and quality, I will.

Also there is a 1:250k scale map, however it is somewhat incomplete in terms of the flyable area in A-10C. Oddly on it Ukraine is mapped out in more detail than Georgia is, I hope that might be a sign of things to come.

Anyways, I though I'd share.

Unfortunately I do not believe this to be possible at this time, see EULA paragraph 3.1, specifically subparagraphs (b) and (f).

3.1 Except as expressly set out in this Licence or in clauses 4.1 and 4.2 below, or as permitted by any local law, you undertake to use the Program for your own personal use, and you shall not:

(b) make copies of the Program or any part thereof, or make copies of the materials accompanying this Program except where such copying is incidental to normal use of the Program or where it is necessary for the purpose of back-up or security;

(f) not to disassemble, decompile, reverse engineer or create derivative works based on the whole, or any

part, of the Program nor attempt to do any such things

Those maps are not necessarily ED property, and thus it might not be up to ED to permit any use except as included within the simulator itself. It's an impressive work to be sure, but please try to check up on such possible issues before spending weekends of work on such things.

Pretty sure those maps are in the public domain, seeing as how they're the same ones the USAF uses.

But... really? Dragging, of all things, an EULA out?

Copyrights and licensing, once again doing absolutely nothing for the betterment of mankind...

We will not have a debate about copyrights.

If you can obtain proof that said maps are indeed public domain, feel free to PM me links. "Pretty sure" and assumptions will not do, especially in a case where ED itself may be liable if it were to allow derivative works.

Plus also it's just polite to ask permission. I'm sure ED will be pretty cool about it, they seem pretty open towards oddball things like this.

I don't test for bugs, but when I do I do it in production.

The issue here is that it might not be up to ED.

As can be easily seen on the forums, ED is usually very cool with people doing fun stuff to help the community, but if a given asset doesn't belong to ED then they obviously cannot give such permissions for that specific thing.

That didn't take long to get edited out. :( At least the EULA doesn't say anything about a HUMAN CENTiPAD.

Anyrate, thats why I just posted a much lower quality version to what is actually available. I take it the tactical map on sale from ED and the member who created it was in the clear because they are all "game assets" and not created by third party mapping resources.

Quite correct, it used resources created by ED, and thus ED was able to give permission to the project and, later, strike a deal with the creator that allowed commercialization of it. With the maps in question here though they're not ED property and that makes it hard for them to "be nice". (Think of it like, if ED had a bit of music made, and you want to use it for something, ED is able to give you permission. If ED however licenses a piece of music to use in the product, and you want to use it for something, ED doesn't have an option - they don't even have the legal right to say "yes".)

Sorry to be the bringer of bad news. Appreciate the effort, just bad luck on the choice of object to work on. :(

Blame the TAD map for looking better than the satellite and mission editor view.

I missed it, I hope you get to repost it but not if it gets you in that kind of trouble! :P

if it is a USGS map

USGS lets you use their material as long as you do not resell it

they want you to make reference that it was their material (but ho cares)

USGS is YOURS, you paid for it

so all this bla about ownership is rather over the top

you're not charging money

so do what you like (Torrent?)
