Mohamengina Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 Is it possible to bring up a hud indicator when using the targeting pod for air to air? I keep losing my air targets and find it hard to lock on to them because there seems to be no indicator on the hud of where they are.
nomdeplume Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 Nope, you need to use the situational awareness cue (white dot) on the TGP display to keep yourself oriented. This is apparently correct (i.e. true-to-life), there's no TGP indicator on the HUD in A-A mode. I guess it's to prevent it from obscuring the pilot's view of the target, given the A-10 only has within-visual-range weaponry.

Mohamengina Posted July 11, 2011 Author Posted July 11, 2011 In that case, can you use the air to ground mode instead because that would still track a moving target, even if it was in the air right?
SmokeyTheLung Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 You sure can System specifications: Computer, joystick, DCS world, Beer
genbrien Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 it's just that A-A mode will identify a moving target for you with a little white cross. Mohamengina Posted July 11, 2011 Author Posted July 11, 2011 okay turns out its impossible and/or very difficult to lock on to an air target with air to ground mode.
159th_Viper Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 okay turns out its impossible and/or very difficult to lock on to an air target with air to ground mode. Hence the Air to Air mode of the TGP :) Herewith a previous post that attempts to explain and aid in AA with the TGP: To prosecute targets via TGP: # Set the Depressible Pipper to 41 mils (3 degrees) # Locate and track target in Point Track mode (TMS FWD Short) # Set HUD as SOI (Coolie Hat Up) # Select AIM-9's from the DSMS # Slave AIM-9 seeker to TGP LOS (China Hat FWD Long) # Confirm tone and launch. Herewith track illustrating the principle: 1 - I set the pipper to 3 degrees. 2 - Select AA on TGP and set as SOI. 3 - Scan area where I am expecting bandit from. You'll see from the TGP that once I picked him up in the TGP FOV I kept him there by decreasing zoom to 3Z. 4 - Once the tracking cross appears, I place the bandit in Point-Track mode (TMS Fwd Short) and dive for the deck to ensure he does not pick me up and turn me into swiss cheese. 5 - In the dive, I set the HUD as SOI and select the AIM-9's from the DSMS. 6 - Utlizing the TGP for situational awareness I climb back up onto his six 7 - With HUD in AA mode, slave AIM-9 seeker to TGP LOS. You'll see that the seeker reticle is on the top of the HUD and is locked as indicated by the tone - Just follow the seeker up the HUD and fly until the bandit is in your FOV. 8 - Satisfy yourself that you're within range, launch and confirm kill.
