WildFire Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Not really a wish list item Im just thinking out loud and wanted to share... I was reading a bunch of topics on realism of the TGP, visually aquiring targets, stuff of that nature and I really thought it would be neat to have a place like afghanistan to fly around. I watched that Restrepo documentary a while ago and I was just now thinking how it would be a blast to be attempting to fly CAS in a place such as the Korengal valley. It would prob consist of doing a whole lot of circles, firing off a few rockets into some bushes on the side of a steep mountain and then going home. Mostly attempting to engage infantry of course. With the steep gradients of the mountains there and the amount of foliage it would make quite a spectacle for gun runs, rockets, and dumb bombs. I know theres a lot of mountains in the map we have now and surely more to come with nevada(is that what its called?) but I noticed none of the mountains really have a whole lot of tree cover, or maybe I just havent looked for them hard enough yet.. Anyone know of a place? Might have to make a small scale CAS mission like this, specifically supporting some units in a valley. That is, if I can find suitable terrain.
sam777777 Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 amount of foliage in afg/Iraq? THIS is GEORGIA we are flying in NOW! http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/55/Georgian_mountains.jpg It's one of the most forested places in earth! Unfortunately in game the ground is just smoothness, In real life (I just got back from there) it is bush, heath, hedges and other stuff, nothing like in the sim. <VAAF> Virtual Australian Air-Force :joystick::pilotfly:
Madman777 Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 I have to admit, for other reasons, I would *LOVE* to have an Afghanistan theater. But of course, this has been said and requested probably a thousand times. Maybe, hopefully, luckily, with the release of DCS F/A-18 we'll see a brand new map, and it could be Afghanistan. Could be. We can hope. i7-12700k, 32GB Ram, RTX 3060 12GB, TrackIR 5, Lots of SSD Space, etc etc DCS World - All the cool modules

Madman777 Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 i hope this too, but i doubt it will happen.. we dont even know for sure whether the F-18 is the next module or not. hehehe yeah, of course we don't know yet. That's my way of saying I really want it. :-) My apologies if I confused anyone. Nevada is very cool map, but any campaigns or semi-realistic missions will be VERY fictional...except training missions of course, they would be perfect for Nevada..of course. i7-12700k, 32GB Ram, RTX 3060 12GB, TrackIR 5, Lots of SSD Space, etc etc DCS World - All the cool modules
WildFire Posted July 15, 2011 Author Posted July 15, 2011 wow, first sentance said it wasnt a wish list item... and moved it goes... mod fail. Yeah it is supposed to have lots of trees in such but yeah I was remarking at the amazement of how unbearably flat it is. Cant have everything though, I understand, I really was just thinking aloud.
Frostiken Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 (edited) Nevada is very cool map, but any campaigns or semi-realistic missions will be VERY fictional...except training missions of course, they would be perfect for Nevada..of course. Does it really matter what you call the ground underneath you? I'm having a hard time understanding how bombing virtual Russians with your virtual A-10 in your video game in a conflict that never occurred and that the US was never involved in is any less fictional because it's over Georgia. Afghanistan: 1) Has lots of desert and semi-arid scrubland. 2) Is very mountainous. Nevada: 1) Has lots of desert and semi-arid scrubland. 2) Is very mountainous. Speed Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 (edited) I'd rather have Iraq... we could do fictional and non-fiction based Gulf War/no fly zone/Iraqi Freedom/etc missions. The infantry AI in DCS still has light years to go before good CAS in support of and against infantry units can become a reality. So I'd rather have a map where yes, later, we can realisitically do CAS in support of infantry, and in the short time period, we can also attack tanks, do deep strikes against factories, realistically fly air cover and have actual MiGs to shoot at... the Iraq theater in real life had just about all different combat missions. Geographically, it may be more boring to look at, but who cares... the type of combat that occured there leads to a much more interesting and engaging simulation with much more variety to keep people pumped and wanting to come back for me. Plus, nearby water allows carrier ops :) A quality Iraq map hasn't been done since Janes F-15, and to a lesser extent, the PMC ODS theater for Falcon 4, but that theater had a lot of object placement issues and was never really finished. On the other hand, we could have Afghanistan, where the only realistic combat would be to shoot up some helpless Taliban.... uhhh... would be fun sometimes, but the Iraqi theater in comparison has a more realistic amount of variety to offer, and thus, the biggest fun factor. You can realistically go up against a powerful air defense system, you can realistically engage MiGs, you can realistically fly really low to stay below radar.... I think the point is made. The main problem with the Iraq theater would be size, since you'd really need it to span from the UAE all the way up to Incirlik, Turkey, and over to the Med to include the RAF base in Cyprus. Anyway, the Georgia theater is nice for Russian aircraft, but we really need the Iraqi theater for US aircraft... my two dream theaters for DCS would be the current Georgian theater extended over to the Caspian to make it fully encompass Chechnya and Dagestan, and the Iraqi theater. Typically, you'd fly your Russian aircraft on the Georgia map, and fly US aircraft on the Iraqi map. 213 Posted July 16, 2011 Posted July 16, 2011 the terrain in lock on and dcs tend to be bald and not very detailed. i think it's simply the scale of the maps. it's just way too big to have any of those kinds of details. i would prefer smaller maps with higher complexity tbh, but i mainly play helicopters so that's important.

It's an idea... a smaller map with more detailed terrain and a higher object density. Would be fun for helos I suppose. WildFire Posted July 18, 2011 Author Posted July 18, 2011 This thread wasnt really about nevada so your question cedaway might be misplaced and missed. I believe there is a thread just for nevada, a couple actually. I have been flying around the map looking for terrain that I was addressing and I may have found something manageable. I think I have a few ideas...
