Hey guys,

Quick question about setting up the DSC BS server that I've yet to find an answer to scouring the web.

The GUI seems pretty straightfoward. I'm hosting, so I click on Server. I enter the name of the server, set to internet, 5 players and my correct computers IP address shows as the interface.

On my router I've configured port 10308 both TCP and UDP for my computers IP address to be port forwarded.

For options (there are only 2), but my connection is set to ADSL. I've also verified the correct IP address of my computer through my command prompt and it matches what the game tells me via the interface box in server.

I'm temporarily not running any background apps that would interfere with my connection to the internet, ie, mcafee, norton etc. Even the default windows firewall has been temporarily disabled.

A friend of mine is having difficulty seeing me in the server list, but he can see all the other servers that are out there.

Any ideas as to what we could possibly be missing?

Cheers,

Brandon

It´s been a little while since I hosted a BS session. (so something could have changed since, though one answer is better then none :))

You know that youre local PC IP is not youre public IP adress given from youre ISP? Go to http://www.whatismyip.com/ and tell this adress to youre friend after starting the server. He then can directly connect via the MP interface.

It can took a while until the master server recognised youre BS session.

Thanks EagleEye. We ended up having to connect via the public IP. The downside was I could connect to his public IP, but he couldn't connect to mine. So I'm wondering if I'm missing a setting in my router.

A while ago I had an MP session with a buddy. I just checked my settings from back then and everything is like you described:

  • Router forwards ports 10308 TCP and 10308 UDP to my machine hosting the game
  • In the game's server settings it shows my local IP (192.168.x.x)
  • (Don't forget to actually start the server)
  • Buddy connects to my WAN IP
  • Happy flying :-)

I think that's really all there is to do.

My first guess would be a firewall blocking the uncommon traffic (after all, that's a firewall's job), but you said even the Windows firewall was disabled.

You could try running a network sniffer like Wireshark to check if there's any traffic at all on ports 10308 TCP/UDP reaching your computer when your friend tries to connect.

Other than that, I just think it should work.

I noticed with my router it didn't want to route any of the ips ending with .102 thru .112 for the last set. I changed it to a different ip and also set up a static in my options and have not had problems with it since.

A picture is worth a thousand words.

Anyway, he's done all this, yet connection can't be established to his server.

What he's asking is, with his firewall disabled, what else could be hindering connection from others to him?

I would completely agree that there SHOULD be a connection, but oddly enough, it's rejected.

It's possible that the Internet Service Provider blocks that kind of incoming traffic so that it never even reaches the router (and at the same time, outgoing traffic to the same port may well be possible; it's a simple packet filter firewall rule to distinguish between incoming and outgoing traffic).

Unfortunately, in my experience most routers don't offer any way to analyze incoming traffic, so it's really hard to tell whether it's the above problem, whether there's a router problem, another kind of LAN problem or a local host problem. :-/

However, with the given information it would seem plausible to suspect that the ISP filters this traffic before it even reaches the router. B1Helios, you should possibly google a little to check if other customers have similar problems when trying to offer services to the internet.

Друзья, земляки-самарцы есть??? Если есть, то подсобите в покупке симулятора Ка-50 "Черная акула". Был на Книжном рынке - не нашел. Из инета не качает... Беда, одним словом.
