EtherealN Posted October 13, 2011 Posted October 13, 2011 Not blaming DCS but it sure seems like somebody, your distributor perhaps, is trying to prove the market by taking orders, before commiting to providing the product. Let's create a hypothetical scenario where stores can only make money on carrying a product (which isn't true, but for argument), will they still carry anything? No. They want a high throughput between deliveries and sales, because the faster you can move units, the faster you make money. (Velocity of money, or ROI term. My terminology might be off though since I'm translating it as best I can.) Vendors have limited infrastructure to move units, and limited shelf-space to offer wares to their customers. This means that whenever something is "suspect" from a business perspective (for example through being a niche product), they'll be extremely careful about buying in, because the infrastructure and shelf-space could be used pushing a high-volume mainstream product. In economic terms, it's called "opportunity cost" - even if you don't lose money on the transaction itself, if you could have made more money on another transaction using the same resources, that's an "opportunity cost". This can be shelf space, infrastructure etcetera. So yeah, unfortunately the fact is that it is extremely hard to "push" simulators through brick-and-mortar stores, because they can get a much quicker ROI through console shooters. Or at least - they think they can. Up to all of us to prove them wrong. If you enter a store that doesn't carry it, please let them know how unhappy you are about that decision. That's the kind of stuff that can make things go faster in future. :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Daniel "EtherealN" Agorander | Даниэль "эфирныйн" Агорандер Intel i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz, ASUS GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1GB, Samsung 830series 512GB SSD, Corsair AX850w, two BENQ screens and TM HOTAS Warthog DCS: A-10C Warthog FAQ | DCS: P-51D FAQ | Remember to read the Forum Rules | | | Life of a Game Tester
ED Team Wags Posted October 13, 2011 ED Team Posted October 13, 2011 Very well said. The other element at play is price point. The higher the price, the less likely retail is to carry a niche product. Specter1606688147 Posted October 14, 2011 Author Posted October 14, 2011 Good to here the US boxed version is on its way. Any word on the printed manual (English, obviously)? I'm guessing, with a manual that is over 300 pages, you will probably stand a better chance of printing it yourself then seeing it in the box:book:
kylania Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 I'm guessing, with a manual that is over 670 pages, you will probably stand a better chance of printing it yourself then seeing it in the box:book: Fixed. :) And yeah, you'll probably get the manual PDF on the disk, like you do with the download, and not printed. Here's hoping they have a nice printed version, but it's doubtful. Ramstein Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 US retail units are currently in manufacture. I would not expect to seem them available in stores until late Oct / early Nov. 2 to 4 weeeks then maybe,, hopefully..:joystick: ASUS Strix Z790-H, i9-13900, WartHog HOTAS and MFG Crosswind G.Skill 64 GB Ram, 2TB SSD EVGA Nvidia RTX 2080-TI (trying to hang on for a bit longer) 55" Sony OLED TV, Oculus VR

Sndman Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 I've been waiting myself but couldn't take it any more. Downloaded the sim this morning and it is quite impressive to say the least. It was a huge mistake on my part to have A-10C, Black Shark, Rise of Flight and Cliffs of Dover on the hard drive all at the same time! I'll in divorce court by the end of the year.:pilotfly:

That's the kind of stuff that can make things go faster in future. :)Hard to argue, except the date keeps getting pushed back. Some people these days (myself being a prime example) just can't afford games like the old days. I am pretty much only able to buy 1 or 2 games a year. I'm going to have to decide.. A-10 OR Battlefield 3, but not both. Which one hits the shelves 1st? A or B? A or B?
EtherealN Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 Sure, the date gets pushed back, but it's out of ED's hands. I would indicate that digital delivery is always an option, but if you specifically want a "box" then sure. That part of the debate probably doesn't need to be re-hashed. (But I'm sure you can see why DD is such an awesome thing for a company like ED - games can be released when desired and doesn't have to sit there waiting for these brick and mortar stores to get things going.) Personally speaking though, BF3 will not have the same longevity. There are very few games that have stayed on my hard drive as long as DCS:BS (and A-10C for that matter, which I have now played for more than a year). But I might be biased. :P (And just in case you are curious, the games that have "lasted longer" are Frontier: Elite 2, IL-2, Space Empires 5, and Defcon. Sim City 4 stayed on for an impressive run, but it eventually grew old.) Falco77 Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 The time draws closer I'll pick this up at Best Buy! I know it's been discussed before but any word on whether ED will release a printed manual (separately of course) some time in the near future? I know there were plans but that was awhile ago and I'm wondering if plans have changed. I'd like to pick one up, but if not I'll have it printed at Office Max in black and white and spiral bound. Just planning my "attack".
