w0bbl3r Posted September 18, 2011 Posted September 18, 2011 I just bought black shark. I am VERY new to ultra realistic flight sims, and have been playing on game mode. LOVING it so far. Problem is that I just have absolutely no idea where to begin with the sim mode. I am asking if anyone fancies themselves a flight teacher? I mean in the way that we would fly missions with no combat operations (to begin with at least), and who would fly alongside me and help me get to grips with the (gazillion different) controls. I really have no idea what the hell I am doing otherwise, and think that some co-op with someone patient enough to show me the ropes would be the quickest, easiest, and smartest way of learning. Thanks in advance, though I know I am probably asking in vain. Anyone who is interested, P.M me please.
joey45 Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 What time zone / Country are you from? The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance. Slazi Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 I found learning alone very satisfying, it's not as hard as you might first think. Even the take off procedure is pretty easy to learn, however I can understand wanting to learn with someone else. If you're on steam, PM me your username so I can add you. Perhaps we can fly together. If you don't have TrackIR yet, strongly consider picking it up. It adds a lot to the sim.
power5 Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 Rule number 1 for the BS, Trim. Trim, then trim. Map the trim button to something on your cyclic within easy grasp of one of your fingers. Mine is my pinky button at the bottom of my stick. Everytime you move the cyclic you want to push the trim button in. Then hold it in till you helo stabilizes in the attitude you desire. Then release the trim button and let the stick recenter as quick as possible. I have a G940 with FFB so my stick will stay about where I let off the button. Then if I want, I can push gently on it to get the helo to change attitude a small bit without having to retrim. This does require one of my hands though so for true hands off flying you will want to retrim till the helo is flying just as you want it to. Use RCtrl+Enter to get the little red box in the lower left of the screen. This will allow you to see where your controls are at any time. I would love to help you learn but my flight time is very unscheduled thanks to 2 lovely small daughters. I fly mostly single player missions right now. Rusty_M Posted September 19, 2011 Posted September 19, 2011 I could show you how NOT to fly. I'm plenty good at making mistakes! The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine! http://www.twitch.tv/rusty_the_robot https://www.youtube.com/user/RustyRobotGaming

spikenet Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 I would love to help you learn but my flight time is very unscheduled thanks to 2 lovely small daughters. I fly mostly single player missions right now. I know the feeling! A big part of the fun is learning all the systems and feeling good when it all comes together.. sure, its not easy but I cant imagine the game being as rewarding if I was shown everything.. Get on youtube and checkout the producers notes, that will get you going in the right direction! cheers
Tangolima600 Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 (edited) Welcome to the party, Wobb. Like these guys said, understanding the trim system is very important. Make sure you got a place on your HOTAS for the trimmer switch because you will be using it after every change in attitude. Here's a good place to start when learning how the trimmer works. Let us know what time zone/country you are in and I'm sure one of us can show you the ropes. http://www.simhq.com/_air13/air_428a.html PS. Also learn about the pros and cons of the coaxial rotor system... careful how you maneuver your bird at high speeds http://www.simhq.com/_air13/air_427a.html Good luck Edited September 20, 2011 by Tangolima600
w0bbl3r Posted September 20, 2011 Author Posted September 20, 2011 I'm UK, GMT london. Very helpful stuff so far guys, thanks a bunch. You guys aren't nearly as "elitis" as I had been led to believe. I also got a copy of FSX. Is this a good starting point for new "Pilots"? I did the first few tutorials, and found them nice and simple, but with good realism in the flight mechanics. Even the wind blowing around my little microlight is very immersive. Just worried the difficulty will spike too steeply for me sometime soon. But so far so good with FSX. I haven't done much with black shark yet though, other than a couple of early missions in game mode, which is STILL tricky sometimes. Is there perhaps a happy medium between game and sim in BS? I mostly find game easily simple enough for me, and would like to know how to add more realism, and WHICH things to enable first to help me getting used to it. I also got A-10C, but haven't had much luck with that. I can't even pull off the 180 degree turn in the tutorial first mission. Don't know why, but when I get to 180 it says I failed. Maybe my speed changed too much or I went to high or low? Oh well, still fun. But BS is my fave. Never thought a heli sim would interest me this much, but it really is good. Are there any other heli sims out there similar? When I say similar I mean that you can turn realism down some so as to get used to it first.
w0bbl3r Posted September 20, 2011 Author Posted September 20, 2011 Steam group - Digital Combat Simulator: Black Shark (DCS:BS) I think this is one of the groups I joined the other day, not positive. Has 116 members, right? I joined, and I think I had a friend invite from someone there, hopefully they will be able to help me out in-game sometimes. Also, once I am getting better, what is the best way of finding like-minded (and like-skilled of course) players for co-op missions? Actually, I do believe that friend invite was from YOU Slazi, right? Accepted anyway, cheers
Chrisakky Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 I'f you really do need help... I added you on Steam. YouTube channel
Rusty_M Posted September 20, 2011 Posted September 20, 2011 Talking to people here is a fine way to find people for co-op. I'd probably be up for that sometime. Just don't try to learn too much from me. I doubt I'm one of the better ones here, but I've only been online once with this game. The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine! http://www.twitch.tv/rusty_the_robot https://www.youtube.com/user/RustyRobotGaming
w0bbl3r Posted September 20, 2011 Author Posted September 20, 2011 I'f you really do need help... I added you on Steam. Ah, that's you is it? Accepted then. Thanks for the help. I also notice you are in the BS game group on steam as well.
Slazi Posted September 21, 2011 Posted September 21, 2011 I added you the other day Wobbler, I'm still getting used to things myself, but I'm able to take off and kill things pretty effectively. If you want to know how to do complex moves I'm not the man to ask, but if it's just getting off the ground and completing missions - I can help.
