AngelAtTheTomb Posted November 27, 2011 Posted November 27, 2011 Hello all, I've searched about and been unable to find anything like a guide to the A-10C's external features, i.e. antennas, pitots, bumps and ridges. Found one for the F-16 but no A-10. Anyone have anything? I'd especially like to know what the long rectangular box on the spine between the engines is. Is this the APU inlet? And how about the circular shallow domed object right behind the cockpit?

Avilator Posted November 28, 2011 Posted November 28, 2011 That's the "Doghouse" it's part of the ECS system... Doesn't that lead to a heat exchanger for the cockpit air? AngelAtTheTomb Posted November 29, 2011 Author Posted November 29, 2011 What about the two circular projections on the lower left and right side of the nose, on each side of the gun? Laser illumination sensors?
Harzach Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 What about the two circular projections on the lower left and right side of the nose, on each side of the gun? Laser illumination sensors? RWR sensors. There are two on the tailcap as well.
3instein Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 Hi folks, RE:External features,I didn't know this till I was watching a youtube vid a few weeks back about an air show with some A-10's flying about, with a commentator on a PA system. He was telling the crowd about the plane and especially the paint scheme under the cockpit (the black oval) and how it's there to confuse ground forces as to what angle of attack the plane is at and if it is coming toward you or flying away from you.I had noticed said black spot in the sim many times but never paid much attention to it,but for something so simple it is really quite ingenious how it works,as when you are looking at the plane from underneath or on the ground sometimes it really is confusing for a second or two to figure out which way the aircraft is turning, either away from,or toward you, giving the pilot a few more seconds I suppose, pretty cool I think. Is there any other examples that a paint scheme is used in a similar way eg: to confuse an opponent? Mick. Of course...MiG-29, Su-27/30, F-15, F-18, Mirage(s), F-4, JAS-39 etc. Im not sure but i think i saw F-14, F-16 and Tornado too with fake canopy paint. Atop the midnight tarmac, a metal beast awaits.
