Just read on Wikipedia...

" In July 2010, the USAF issued Raytheon a contract to integrate a Helmet Mounted Integrated Targeting (HMIT) system into A-10Cs"

"The height of the engines decreases the chance that sand or stones will be ingested. This also allows engines to keep running while the aircraft is serviced and rearmed by ground crews, reducing turn-around time."

Is this done IRL?

It's missing because the version of the A-10C modeled (Suite 3.1) does not have it.

Yes.

So is it just for repairs that we need to have the engines shut down in-game? don't think I've tried rearming with engines running.

Does this model and suite (3.1) use the sniper pod? if so I don't think that would be a valid response.

The response is valid. The pod is just a pod.

AFAIK, there is no units using the HMIT on the A-10C. Could you point me to any unit using it?

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.

Issuing a contract for something is not the same as using it. New capabilities don't happen overnight in th military world, they take years.

And the chances of seeing any features from higher avionics suites in DCS is very small.

Why would every other Helmet mounted cuing system/display be public (F-15/16/18/35) except the A-10?

We'll we are on a suite above 6 on our C models at moody and not one is using the helmet mount as of right now.

As to the engines running while rearming/servicing. We use to do what were called ICTs (Integrated Combat Turns) the thought process was it is faster to reload/refuel with the engines running at the same time. We never used this process in combat, the jets would always taxi to hot pits to refuel (with engines running) then taxi to another location to load munitions (with engines running) but never both at the same time. Not sure how many years ago it's been now but we haven't done ICTs in years.

Hot Pits are a daily/weekly occurance depending on where you are at.

Correct. I've never shut down my engines to rearm/refuel in-game.

You also don't have to have on ground power, you can start up the APU. Here is how it would need to be accomplished real world, you NEVER shut down the #1 engine with the APU running as there is a chance the hot APU exhaust could ignite the fuel that drains out of the engine.

1) Taxi to the spot

2) Shut down #1 engine (crew chief verifies fuel drains from the engine)

3) Start up APU

4) Once APU stabilized at 100% turn on APU GEN

5) Shut down #2 (crew chief verifies fuel drains from the engine)

6) Wait for repairs to be completed (real life you wouldn't do any repairs while power is on the jet)

7) Once repairs completed restart engines and off you go.

Not to stray too far OT here.

I may be totally wrong, but I believe the ICT was dropped a few years ago AF wide. We did one back in '03 during OIF(kind of for the sake of doing one and actually getting a base time if we were actually asked to pull it off for real), and I haven't really seen one since. As a matter of fact, I think the OI's may have been removed since that time.
