Futaba148 Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 Hey all, This is my first post to the forum! This is the quick story behind my cockpit. One of my fathers friends loaned us his TM Warthog a couple weeks ago, and after sitting it on my desk I realized that just wasn't going to do it for me. I was greatly inspired by the numerous awesome cockpits in this forum, and decided to start building a cockpit with whatever wood we laying around the basement. The seat is suppose to be similar to a ACES II, I went off some diagrams and drawing I found for the rough outline. It has lumbar support, and I'm planning to replace the pillow with some sort of seat foam. From there, things just expanded. The 2x4 that the keyboard and mouse are mounted on, is able to swing open to allow easier access. That was a feature requested by my dad. The sub-woofer under the seat is pretty awesome when you start firing the 30mm. I realized my personal computer which I built 3 years ago, wasn't going to be up to the task of running the game, which is when we built the system dedicated to the sim now (specs listed in signature). I'm hoping to add some gauges to the 19", like the engine gauges and the primary flight instruments. And then more down the road I'd like to add functional panels. TM Warthog, Saitek Pro Flight Rudder Pedals, Cougar MFDs, TrackIR 5, 3 23" monitors, 19" monitor (for MFDs), GTX 570, GTX 560 Ti, 64gig SSD, 8 gigs ram, i7 3.4GHz, 1K PSU, 2.1 speakers, all wrapped up in a "leftover plywood" home-built cockpit. airdog Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 I would say that is much better than a "junkyard" cockpit. It's not a bad setup at all. You can have gauges for that setup in under an hour just go HERE and get Helios. It is donationware so its free to use the full version and if you like it please donate to the developer Gadroc. Tons of support on their forums as well as here. Swaty Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 It's a very good set up and it will be better when you add more (panels etc)! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] My Pit

Gadroc Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Let me know if you have any questions as you start building out some of the physical pit. I'm also located in Columbus.

Futaba148 Posted December 13, 2011 Author Posted December 13, 2011 Thanks guys! Let me know if you have any questions as you start building out some of the physical pit. I'm also located in Columbus. Your cockpit build is what sparked my interest in building one! I downloaded Helios yesterday, and I noticed you were in Columbus. I'll definitely have to take you up on that offer, and I'd be more than happy to invite you over to the cockpit! TM Warthog, Saitek Pro Flight Rudder Pedals, Cougar MFDs, TrackIR 5, 3 23" monitors, 19" monitor (for MFDs), GTX 570, GTX 560 Ti, 64gig SSD, 8 gigs ram, i7 3.4GHz, 1K PSU, 2.1 speakers, all wrapped up in a "leftover plywood" home-built cockpit. Futaba148 Posted February 2, 2013 Author Posted February 2, 2013 Update! Hey all, I haven't really been on the forums but I thought I'd update this thread in case anyone uses it for reference. As I got into the very difficult task of aerial refueling I found I was having all sorts of over control issues stemming from myself, but aided by my weak base for the joystick. Enter The Great Base. 22" long, 10" wide, and much more stable. A little difficult to climb in around, but doesn't interfere with game play. Added four LEDs to light up the keyboard for flying in the dark. Powered off of the USB power in the keyboard. I've also got Helios running on my data monitor, great for shooting IFR approaches. Next step is to get some actual seat foam for the seat back. TM Warthog, Saitek Pro Flight Rudder Pedals, Cougar MFDs, TrackIR 5, 3 23" monitors, 19" monitor (for MFDs), GTX 570, GTX 560 Ti, 64gig SSD, 8 gigs ram, i7 3.4GHz, 1K PSU, 2.1 speakers, all wrapped up in a "leftover plywood" home-built cockpit. BHawthorne Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 Looks like a good start. Just remember, the real secret to most of the other awesome builds around here are paint, bondo and wood filler. Those three things hide a lot of woodshop issues.
