Hey ED how about modelling the external fuel tanks igniting into a ball of fire when jettisoned with fuel remaining? :pilotfly:

Seems realistic enough, and discourages people such as myself from jettisoning tanks over populated areas.

Actually,

That is not very realistic. The Gas as a whole in it's liquid form is actually very stable. Jet fuel is basically a very enriched and clean diesel gasoline. The gas itself does not burn very well. In actuality, most aircraft actually preheat the gas prior to it entering the motor to help with combustion. The vapors are actually where the hazard lies.

"Seems" realistic enough?

According to what? Igniting fuel is more difficult than you appear to believe:

First, the fuel being ignited needs to have a certain temperature (to become a gas or at least release vapors) - if I remember right a typical temperature is 60C, with autoignition a couple hundred degrees up. Easy to achieve in an engine, but just slapping down a container of fuel is not a guarantee to achieve this. This has then has to get the appropriate fuel/oxygen mixture. I do not know the exact numbers for jet fuels off the top of my head, but for gasoline you need between ~1.5% and ~7% gasoline fumes in the air for it to burn. If it's lower than the 1.5%, there's not enough gasoline to blow up. If it's over 7%, there's not enough oxygen in the mixture to support an explosion.

Incidentally, this is why, if you come upon a traffic accident and there's people stuck in a burning car (and assuming it's not a blazing bonfire), you should NEVER try to hurriedly drag people out of the car. Instead, douse the flames. The risk of explosion is comparatively small, whatever hollywood wants to say about it, and dragging wounded people out of their automobile may irrevocably injure them if not done properly considering the risk of back/neck injuries and so on. (This is also a good reason to always have a fire extinguisher in your automobile - if you don't have it, odds are other people are like you, and if you end up stuck in your car while it's burning it would be nice to be able to tell a rescuer to pop the trunk and get the extinguisher... :) )

Now, if you drop the fuel tank and the strafe it with incendiary ammunition... Then you might get a nice fire, assuming the fuel was not dispersed on impact as it would likely be. Alternatively, include a detonator - like with the MOAB bombs.

I have seen jettisoned tanks and they aren't all burnt up. I have pictures somewhere, I'll try to find and post.

I try to make a habit if not dropping even empty tanks over populated areas unless in utter emergency, the tanks can be pretty destructive in their own right, I seem to remember an old woman somewhere in the world, getting parts of her house crushed by such a tank... think it was from an f-16.

So you still have a reason to conduct general safety steps:)

What do you guys so frequently need those fuel tanks for?

The only thing I use them is to force a landing at the start of a mission I built.

I read in the manual that they are NEVER used in combat...

Or are you fancying ferry flights?^^

:joystick::megalol:

Edit:

That was probably a bit rude.

I did not mean it to be...

->Sorry!

Yeah, Fuel Tanks ... or Training Ordinance:

I think that ED better improve all of the Sim ordinance explosions before investing in some Hollywood exploding fuel tanks.

Seriously, they look like graphics from the 90's IMHO.
