In situation when Kinect4win is cheaper than tir5 a lot of us thought about it. But I think devs are on move now. If software starts supporting Kinect natively, I'll be pleased to get rid of that strange cap I have to wear whenever playing DCS/LO (honestly, I look like an idiot with that cap on my head, but I'm not saying I look much better without it)...

Problem is NaturalPoint took great share of the market and I'm pretty sure they forced exclusive agreements at least with big players. So it will not be easy to make way for Kinect, at least in old titles. Maybe using mouse-emulation approach as with FaceTrackNoIR...

They should try to make it work because for flight sims it could allow for MP hand signals for both flight sims and FPS.

Kinect is a pretty solid little device. If I can use it and make things function on my kids Xbox360 then I bet anyone can make it work and if anything I wouldn't put it past M$ to make it native in an upcoming version of Windows and a backwards compatible update to at least Vista.

Just think of all the interactions you could have with a cockpit in the DCS world. No more needs for Helios, X-keys boxes or people building their own cockpit worlds for these sims since the game could support the movement and hand motions within the game allowing you to interact with the cockpit in a virtual manner by just adding more screens to see the things with.

Has anyone bought a kinect for windows?

If you are a student it is pretty affordable: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msstore/en_US/pd/productID.246711100/search.true

I really would like to try it out but only have basic programming skills. If it comes with drivers and software that allow you to map head movements to direct X axis' then it shouldnt be too hard.

I doubt you get software that complete, I was under the impression that their was an SDK out and that was about it. Even at $250 it would be fun to play with if I had the coding skills.

OpenKinect is a work-in-progress intending to support the Kinect on Windows, Linux and Mac. Since the sim I'm working on works on those platforms this is much more interesting to me than TrackIR, and it already has a Java JNA interface (as well as a Java JNI interface), so using it should be very simple. Gotta love Free Software projects :)

You would think that since this comes with a pretty in-depth SDK, filled with commands for depth and face tracking even using near mode (allowing the windows kinect to operate much closer than the xbox version) and since microsoft also makes directX, then it wouldnt be a stretch to make them work together.

Personally as a simmer who plays on a projector, I'm awfully tired of my track IR camera blocking the view of my screen and casting a shadow on it (I'd put the track IR behind me if my cockpit seat wasnt blocking the IR sensors). I am dying for head tracking that works without having to be in precise alignment with IR sensors positioned a few feet away.

I'm using an xbox kinect as webcam with facetracknoir. It works great if you can be bothered to fiddle with room lighting, dead zones and curves. Any webcam is fine tho.

Would be really interested in seeing a head tracker using the kinect IR. Although the dedicated windows kinect would be more appropriate as it has the close field detection that the xbox kinect doesn't and much much better 3D capture http://blogs.msdn.com/b/kinectforwindows/archive/2013/03/16/kinect-for-windows-announces-new-version-of-sdk-coming-march-18.aspx

Update to above. Got a PS3 eye for £8 all in from CEX, and with face track its much better than the kinect. It'll do either 60 or 120 fps and the system overhead is minute compared to kinect. Also even better results can be had using a three led setup according to the wider web.

Which I have just built and will test over the next couple of days :)
