Now what is this, no Diablo III thread yet?

Anyone else here looking forward to playing D3? Only 8 hours until release (at least here in Europe), have been waiting aprox. 8 years for this. Oh sweet joy! :devil_2:

I don't know, on the one hand, D2 was the first game i ever played on a LAN party, as such, i have sort of an emotional attachment to the series, on the other hand, as a fan of a bit more complex RPGs, the beta i played seemed a bit shallow. If i ever get it, it won't be at the release.

so have I...I downloaded it as soon as I set up my annual pass for World of Warcraft....however, I figured there might be some people out there who don't and be interested in knowing they can actually download and install the game early

Just finished the installation (with its great traditional Diablo guitar music), smiled all the way through the intro movie and fiddled with the few options. Now if only Battle.net would let me log in... ETA 5 hours...

Yes its isometric view only, no first person or over-the-shoulder.

I always liked the camera view in Diablo....I think you can see more. First person in this game would be abysmal. Quite possibly the only thing worse would be a 3d camera....IMHO of course

I think first person view would be a nice gimmick, just for fun. But I don't think that you could actually play D3 that way. Borderlands on the other hand worked pretty well in first person, but that was more of a shooter anyways.

It wouldn't feel like Diablo any other way.:D

I'm afraid that Diablo 3 might be a little too... old school for my tastes. I'm going to wait a few days after release and check out some reviews. I love Starcraft II, and how "old-school" it is, because I think it is the best ever collect-resources-and-build-a-base-and-army style RTS. Basically, I think that WC I, WC II, SC I, WC III etc. defined the essentials of this style of game, and that this style of game is conceptually "complete". There are no, or few, further innovations that can be made to basic gameplay. It is a mature game concept.

However...

Diablo III- well it's an RPG. I'm not sure the same applies here. Look how far we've come in the RPG genre since Diablo II was released. I'm scared Blizzard learned the wrong lesson from Starcraft II.

So I guess my question is..

What is the Diablo III end-game content? Diablo II's end game was awful. Does gameplay consist of more than using the same spell over and over and over again? After playing WoW, where I had like 6-12 spells/skills I would commonly use (this was back before any expansion packs), and then a little bit of SWTOR for about a month and a half (I quit because it was taking time away from DCS), where I actually had like 15-20 skills I would commonly use (I played a very complex class), I'm afraid an RPG where I just spam the same one or two skills over and over and over again forever won't appeal much to me anymore.

Diablo III has even less skills than Diablo II. If it's just the amount of skills and spells that you like, you might be disappointed. However, the gameplay is really awesome. It looks very good and is very polished. I have read somewhere that there is or will be demo/starter edition, so you might just want to check it and see for yourself.

Also, Diablo was never an RPG, it's a hack and slash game. Comes down to killing hundreds of monsters, getting better items and leveling up.

One thing I really like in Diablo 3 is how they have integrated the multiplayer so seamlessly into the experience. It is a game that requires persistant online connection even for signleplay, which is a bit annoying (at least when the servers were acting uö), but if you've got friends it really shines: you don't have separate sessions for MP or anything like that - if a friend of yours log in while you are playing they can just click a button and join you where you're at, and you can have fun as much as you like. What's going on then counts for both of you, and either can leave without disrupting the experience of the other guy. (Monsters and such are scaled on-the-fly to the character(s) in a game.)

Really nice, have used that feature a couple times with some friends. Was really funny when a friend pressed the wrong button and entered my game with his lvl4 mage, I was cosniderably higher up. The first little critter he saw killed him in about one shot. Was hilarious. :D

It really really is a terrible time sink though. You really need to keep your wits about you to stop yourself from playing it too much - you don't notice the clock ticking while playing since there really is always things going on, keeping your brain occupied.

Haha... I ended up buying it too. And it is a terrible time sink- thankfully they added a clock to the upper right hand corner so you know when it's time to stop and get back to work... at least, it helps me- I'm only level 13 :)

Is there really zero character customization apart from items and which skills you put on your skill bar? I was expecting, at the least, talent trees and a respec cost; I really like that system. Not sure I'm liking this all-characters-are-equal system.

Anyway, if you want, PM me your bnet contact info and I'll add you :)

Argh, by the time i'll get it, you'll be so uber-leveled-up that there won't be any point in playing it with you. :P
