A marketing suggestio0n should DCS decide to expand on WWII

Quick question Jim:

When releasing Black Shark 2 , how come there was no marketing done for it , generally most companies tell you a game is coming out (before it is released) thus generating interest in it , they use adverts and other marketing tools to hopefully make more sales , you guys did nothing is just appeared one morning.

Or is this what you mean when you say "However, the flight sim market for TFC/ED seems to break the traditional "rule of thumb"."

Just curious

To be honest, that was a FUBAR. A misunderstang between development and sales/marketing. Hopefully the loophole has been closed and it will not happen again!

Nice try? WTH is that supposed to mean.. ?

... I just don't like jets ... but that's me.. I am also well aware that this is a beta and that the FFB issue will be fixed.. As I said .... I am just making a suggestion.. The WWII market is huge and despite all the work that goes into making a DCS AC ... if each AC is marketed at $40 it will be a harder sell.. but if each new AC was marketed at the price I mentioned .... even up to $20 per.. considering the fidelity of the model..it would sell better than $40 per.. and that's all I am saying.

I know hundreds of guys just like me.. who love simming.. are not crazy about the modern stuff.. and would wet their pants to get a broader offering of classic warbirds with the fidelity of this P-51...

Hi Bearcat, please though, think about the thousands of us that do like modern jets, that have helped put ED where they are today, and have been waiting for a DCS level modern jet since Ka-50 was announced years ago.

We have had to have patience while P-51 was surprisingly announced, and we probably will have to wait through FC3, Combined Arms, Nevada etc. Don't get me wrong, we all have our preferences, but please just have some consideration for everyone. In the end ED will do what they need to do to keep afloat and hopefully the 3rd party community will grow.

p.s Yes, ED's P51D kicks ass, and it would be good to see more WWII stuff come along as well :)

Regarding marketing, I hope ED finds a way to improve this. I know that simulations do not fall in the same category as mainstream games, however, seeing how Call of Duty sells the same game each year with only advertising (seriously, it's the same game every year and people still buy it), some promotion might help.

One mainstream gaming site published a DCS video with a headline "Sims are beautiful" and the interest was very high - lots of comments with people expressing how impressed they were. Obviously this does not mean they went to buy it straight away, but some maybe. More promotion might eventually increase product awareness and improve sales a bit over time. The majority of people associate simulation games with titles like Tropico or The Sims (which we all know to be blasphemy!). Just saying - some trailers or news to the press could help and the community would most definitely be willing to offer all the assistance they can. I would have never got into DCS if it wasn't for the people on mostly IL-2 oriented forums saying that DCS is the new hot thing.

Also, ED needs to improve on it's approach towards the community. More interaction with the fans is beneficial both ways. Maybe some contest? Best P-51 skin gets in the official release and the author gets into the credits, or get a discount, or a teddy bear, or free candy? And some more frequent updates on the progress of things would also be nice.

Oh.. I am not suggesting at all that DCS switch to props en masse .. I think that their product is so good that they could still do modern jets as well.. even if the modern jets were still their primary focus.. I feel you on that ..Not the whole jet thing so much as the fact that this is your chosen hobby and from what I have seen and heard no one does it better as far as modern AC go.. and the last thing you want to see is them switching gears en masse.. but I don't think that's going to happen and in the FAQ it said as much.. What I am hoping is that they can maybe get enough third party folks to do some or most of the grunt work.. and then they can shine it up and put it out there..

Who knows.. (somebody does but I certainly don't..) maybe that is a monumentally daunting task that is just dreaming bigger than any one company can deliver on.. I am not sure what all goes into it.. I'm just dreaming, suggesting and sharing what's n my head with folks who, even if they aren't interested per se can certainly appreciate it or have some kind of opinion on it good or bad.. Who knows before this is all said and done I my become just as interested in the whole DCS stable.. because it is all that good.. but to see this my favorite AC modeled this well.. umph umph umph .. gotta tell ya.. It sparks the dream machine for sure..

Yo BearCat!

I know this is perhaps off-topic but have you by any chance gotten the opportunity to compare the A2A (FSX) P51 with DCS (beta) version? I'm (obviously) more of a helicopter guy and usually not interested in ww2 machines but since this seems to be good chance to compare two different sims on the same new model it would be fun to know any differences in characteristics etc. Not that much on YT either...

- the DCS vs

- the A2A vs

Well, I got to say that the sound seems impressive on A2A vs anyway (!)

You can't compare DCS P-51D yet, it is still a Beta version and early in it's development. That said it is looking promising.

Ok, I see! Looking forward for the final result then!

Thanks!

No.. I have it .. but yoyu know somewthing weird.. I could never get my MSFFB2 to work right in FSX.. or CFS3 for that matter.. Whic to me was crazy because it's a MS stick.. even f it is discontinued.. in CFS3 it would bend hard to the corner as soon as I touchedit and stay there.. I could never get it centered.. I tried forums.. wrote to MS .. they said "We don't support that product anymore.." I knew folks who had them and they worked fine but for some reason mine never worked .. and because I had IL2 it was not a major issue for me.. If I can't get it right in DCS I'd consider getting another stick though.. but I think they will work out any of the bugs the right way.. I have a hard time with that mottled FS scenery look anyway.. that's why

and

It's no doubt a study sim. You would only have to buy one and stick with it. At least from a virtual squadron stand point. Like IL-2, I just stuck with the A6Ms and had a blast. You don't have to buy every release they make.

It's almost like Apple Inc in marketing. But I see where these modules are headed....a more realistic Battlefield type sim.

DSC

Modern Warfare

Steel Beast

Silent Hunter

All rolled up into a single world engine, where you basically pay for a cockpit, LBVs, driver seat, or a bridge.

I have the P-51. I would purchase, separately, and additionally the Me-109 and the F4U, both WWII era. That is all I would need.

Maybe a Spit, too.

If we had the Spit IX, the 109 G2/G6 and a 190 D-9 a map and some AI-only models to populate it, I'd be more than happy.

Chill, its beta. I'm sure ED will provide some tinn cans to shoot at ;)

What the current P-51 community calls dogfighting competition is a real joke.

I like the plane. But I go elsewhere for WWII era fun.

DCS/Eagle will have to improve greatly what they have, compared to the competition.

Saturday, for several hours, I was playing the unlocked Multiplayer servers for the P-51. I ended up going to FC2 as that is where everybody is. The rest of the day I played the other sim.

I just as well play offline with the AI, which by-the-way, the AI are pretty good, second to none as to past games/sims I have played since 1985. With this new gizmo they created, I hope it is more fun in Single Player.

So, before I purchase anymore products, WWII or otherwise, from DCS and partners, I will wait and see. I will not buy anymore betas. I can wait.

FC2 I am currently learning. I never played it much. I found a CH profile to use and I will learn how to create my own .cms profiles. The A-10C and the BS1 & BS2: I know the basics, still lots to learn from both. The P-51 I like a lot and do pretty good with, still I need to fine tune the rocket attacks and bombing. That is plenty to do, learn and play with for awhile.

For community fun playing with 50 or more guys at a time on a company owned radio system to use, not TeamSpeak---I play the other sim.

There is no community to FC2/DCS like that here, yet.

My two-cents, and it ain't worth much...

And you should probably go elsewhere for your full WWII era battles. You probably wont see a full WWII war with the DCS series for now.

However there are already 3'rd parties eveolving on the whole familiy of products now, so some time in the future - who knows. We all hope for the same.

TBH, if you check the FAQ it is intended to be like this for now.

Q: How is the P-51 supposed to fit into DCS? This makes no sense to me.

A: DCS is an open simulation environment, not confined to any one era, level of fidelity, or 1st party development. In the future ED and 3rd parties may add all sorts of different units ranging from gliders to X-51s.

Dogfighting is still not joke unless you mean "the lack of WWII oponents for a proper dogfight".

Dogfighting is probably subjective for both you and I.

Certainly no joke for me.

Yes, few opponents, yesterday there were none. Well, they were there, but they got too close to the fire and the sams got them on the one server, LOL. The icons were turned off and I played over an hour and never saw anybody until a sam got them.

When you had your P-51D server up, I had a blast.

Thanks for that.

Another case-in-point: Nate's Reno race course is fun. But I always just race myself! Nobody shows up in Multiplayer. (I also downloaded it for Single Player use. Thanks Nate.

You guys should have helicopter races.

Yes, there is quite a community of guys here as 3rd party support.

Maybe it just needs some time.
