zaGURUinzaSKY Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 Some aerobatic teams call it Delta some others Wedge. These are my ideas, what you think? I think Wedge is more appropriate for this formation, from english dictionary: "Wedge: a triangular-shaped piece, especially of food: Auntie Ann put a huge wedge of fruit cake on my plate. a wedge of cheese" When you draw a "wedge" of fruit cake, the point is pointing forward (as direction of flight, same for the wedge of fruit cake when flying to my mouth!) From english dictionary DELTA: an area of low flat land, sometimes shaped approximately like a triangle, where a river divides into several smaller rivers before flowing into the sea. If we follow the flow of the water, we see the point of triangle in opposite direction of water. That's why I don't like to call these formation "Wedge". Here, some more formations as we like to perform it, I hope these are usefull. Robbie.
Krendel Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 Actually, you've found wrong meaning of the word "DELA".Yes, tere is such a thing as a delta of a river. But there is also a Greek letter delta. The capital delta looks like triangle pointing upwards
Krendel Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 And the delta of a river is named after this letter. When somebody says "delta shaped" he means that the object looks like capital delta
RvEFoxteR Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 actually Wedge is a tactical 2 ship formation mostly used in aerial combat. There is element leader in front and his wingman most often on his right with his nose somewhere in the line of the leader's wingtip. this is a tight wedge form where leader's wingman is on the left: if it would be the case for same positioning in a 3 ship formation then it would be called Echelon And yes as Krendel said Delta formation got the name from Greek letter delta [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
355th_Paulie Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 So, giving some one a "Wedgie" , how do we implement that?? :icon_weed :D
peterj Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 this is a tight wedge form where leader's wingman is on the left: Cool picture, you don't see em to often in gray, what type origin are those?
NEODARK Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 Cool picture, you don't see em to often in gray, what type origin are those? Hint: Look at the "flag" in the picture ;) :p
peterj Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 Hint: Look at the "flag" in the picture ;) :p Irish? ;) I think i can place them as indian Su-30mki now, however that's not the indian country flag afaik. Why are the stripes vertical, military flag?

Actually some teams calls it Delta someothers wedge (red arrows calls Delta the one with point on the back)... no big problem anyway.. I was just curious. Robbie.
peterj Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 Yeah you're right, anyway I rather to think to water in a river when I think to flight.. Actually some teams calls it Delta someothers wedge... no big problem anyway.. I find it close to associate that formation with a delta wing, since it's planes with delta wings flying in a delta formation :) Wedges can also be cut out of spheres (in everyday use atleast), like a wedge of apple. However, dictionary.com list this among other meanings for wedge: 2. c A wedge-shaped formation, as in ground warfare.

Gazehound Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 Irish? ;) I think i can place them as indian Su-30mki now, however that's not the indian country flag afaik. RvEFoxteR Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 Even though the flag on the tail looks Irish those are actually Indian Su30's MKI as PeterJ said [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
zaGURUinzaSKY Posted October 18, 2005 Author Posted October 18, 2005 Probably makes no difference where the Delta is pointing, the difference must be somewhere else. Anyway I talked with the real Snowbirds and they told me that actually the same formation is called in both ways, it depends on the team... This is from Red Arrows Team: Thunderbirds and some others does just the opposite... eheh, we'll uniform both version doing the delta pointing to right.. eheh Robbie.
355th_Paulie Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 we should have a delta ass then... :D
zaGURUinzaSKY Posted October 18, 2005 Author Posted October 18, 2005  In that case would make no difference.. I like it in both ways... Robbie.
