awdrgyjo Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 My computer is dedicated to running A10, and visiting a few forums, after about 10 mins it goes into screen saver, and after another ten mins, it goes to sleep, [although the joystick and throttle are still illuminated] I use the computer between 1-2 hours a day, in relation to wear and tear, is it worth leaving it on standby, or should I shut down, thanks in advance.
EtherealN Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 Exact computer specification, and PSU details, would be needed for this. Generally though, a computer with an efficient PSU that goes to "sleep" eats less electricity than a traditional lightbulb. (And if you live in an electrically heated home, almost all of this is converted to heat, which is then fine.) Once again, thanks for the help last year
metalnwood Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 I used to leave the machine running 24hrs a day until I got an SSD and the start up times became reasonable. Every once in a while the wear/tear issue is explored but unless you are expecting to use your machine until 2020 and beyond I wouldnt worry too much about that aspect of it.
cichlidfan Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 My two cents. Aside from the laptops, the only time I shut down is for maintenance or more than a day or two of travel away from home. No sleep, no hibernation either. FatSlapper Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 I have been using PCs since 1984. The old school rule was leave it on because of thermal cycling caused by turning on and off. Through experiences I have found that pc's that are on all the time suffer the most failures due to heat because of the build-up of dust and the fans get noisier because of bearing wear. The drives fail more often too. Most people DO NOT blow out and clean their cabinets, if You are the type that does You will do it quite often if Your house is "dusty" and even if its not dusty the dust will continue to build and get harder to remove even if You clean it often. If anybody smokes or frys food it will compound this problem. Heat is the enemy of Your CPU, GPU, Chipsets and HDD Turn off the machine when not in use and clean it monthly and You will enjoy Your computer longer than the OS and software will last....speaking of which..I hope I did'nt huff all My canned air again8)
Cali Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 I turn mine off everyday and never had a problem with it. No need to have it running 8+ hours when I'm at work or sleeping.
