Giant Bomb tries its hand again at DCS, this time on the Mustang

Some of you may remember their escapade with the A-10C (http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-digital-combat-simulator-a-10c-warthog/17-5490/). This time they try out the P-51D beta to rather predictable results. Unfortunately, in order to view it you must purchase a subscription.

However, as a subscriber to their site, I can tell you it's actually well worth it, if only for a month, as you can download the videos as well, as this sample can attest to:

If you're still on the fence, here's what you've got to look forward to:

-Despite not having to mess around with the EGI/INS, loading DTS cartridges, creating countermeasure release programs, and altering weapon profiles, it somehow takes them longer to get airborne.

-They learn the consequences of using Alt-Shift-Tab, while the plane is still cold and on the runway.

-Upon flying into a cloud, they learn how much of a bummer it was to fly without a HUD.

-As always, they attempt to eject from a plane while upside down.

They've also done a video on The Space Shuttle Mission and Lunar Flight, which of proven to be equally hilarious.

And rejoice, they will do a proper video available to all upon P-51D's proper release, and the three have taken upon themselves to learn at least one of the modules by the end of the year to make a Giant Bomb Squad.

You lost me at the part where I have to 'purchase a subscription' to see a Giant Bomb video.

Oh - my bad...sorry... (serious : I can't read really everything I'm replying to...;))

So please add this to my last posting:

3.5 put in "fake credit-card ID"

:D

edit:

(and move this thread maybe to the chit-chat. ...as businesses models like this shouldn't be advertised on these forums IMHO - financing via advertisement and by getting a e-mail is OK... but not like this. When they make money with DCS contend they should first approve this by ED/TFC )

I think this is a rip-off

Do their premium videos eventually become available for everyone?

I can ask their staff since the "Flight Clubs" tend to be the most well-received feature. In the mean time, a sample of that specific video can be found at the start of this video:

The nice thing about paying for a subscription is not only do you get no advertisements, which is funny because everyone on the internet but you hates advertisements, but you also get their less professional, silly, off beat videos that wouldn't be made without subscriptions.

They will be making a quick look of the game in the future when they have a better understanding of how to actually start the aircraft and get it up in the air, they don't do either of those things for about 40 minutes worth of the video.

They'll also be doing a quick look of DCS Blackshark in the future.

And I'm pretty sure if it were against the law to make money off of a video of a game, they and every other gaming site on the internet would have been taken down years ago; Also I'm sure if they needed permission, they would have gotten it.

I am still trying to grasp paying for a YouTube channel.

I didn't talked about the whole "paid for contend" concept (up to now it looks like I can still decide what I pay for...) - I was only talking regarding using ED/TFC material for it.

Giant Bomb can make what they want - if you ask me!... (sorry biggrin.gif -yes- there is a "but": )

But:

It should be communicated before you use contend of others to make money out off it.

IMHO : I just have a problem with the lack of moral...

A naive example:

Many other members on this forum are helping others out on their first steps by recording tutorials and such...

would you think it is OK to charge someone for watching it without giving something to ED/TFC ?! wink.gif

EDIT:

But that is exactly what I find so funny! Having no advertisement in a "advertisement" only because you pay for it...

What you mean like the many many users that are paid on youtube to upload and commentate on video game gameplay? Yes they should all pay the publisher/developer to be able to show their game off.

What nonsense that is.

Also what is the difference between them charging a subscription(and getting zero advertisement money from subscribers) and getting advertising money from non subscribers? Explain that to me please.

OK - I will try to keep it short and simple:

1.

When you have a running web-page and have good contend and get many clicks.

...

2.

You get the opportunity to get some advertisement on it to keep your page alive

...

3.

When your page is running long enough - other followers will also post valuable contend - that brings us back to point 2.

Now, Here is the difference :

4. you have a successfully page running and you start to think about how to get all the money without sharing the value with your advertisement partners... :

It's EASY: You open a "paid for content" section.:)

I hope you understand now what I'm talking of and is bugging me...

I have no problem at all with it - it absolute OK! - as I wrote: I decide myself what to pay for...

I just pointing out (like I did already in posting #5) that Giant bomb crates money out of using DCS contend.

- and I'm sure it is done without communicating it to ED/TFC.

Otherwise we had already a clarification from official side in this thread or even a "News" on digitalcombatsimulator.com about it.

That's what I call "a lack of moral".

I hope now you really got my point! :)

Sorry ! I tired hard to explain my POV to you...

....yes got in the meanwhile a massage from a native English speaking person, and he also tells me that there is a lack of understanding.

this thread looks like some bizarre solicitation of someone making something wierd and charging money, while using a developers simulator..

I don' think this stuff belongs here, if in these forums at all... I will be surprised if it isn't locked down and deleted soon... it looks like some type of scheme for kids to make money using odd childish humor... and using other people's property to make money...

people come here for this flight sim and info... not ads and links to some wierd youtube channel..

So they want me to pay to watch noobs fail to play a game I've already played?

Doesn't seem to make much sense.

They made a business model for people who are willing to pay to get rid of ads while browsing content.

Makes sense - there are people who are willing to pay for this.

Some people doesn't want to pay - makes sense as well.

Too bad we can't watch it later though, looks like the subscriber content contains content all the way back to early 2011.

Doesn't look like they will ever open it up for free view.

Ah well, we got youtube. ;)

They will be making a quick look, short 40 minute video of the game when they're actually capable of taking off.

This video wasn't made to solicit money from you guys, don't be ridiculous.

@Panzer, I don't think I've ever seen one of their premium videos on youtube. Just wait for the quick look, although I have a feeling based on the posts made here that a lot of you would just pick it apart and think it's stupid.

Posted (edited)

thanks for the update. o7

PS, it makes sense to run such a business model, nothing wrong with that.

I did love the A10 video, nothing to pick apart there - they did it all correctly according to my manual. At least they got off the ground, ... I haven't.

Hehe, yeah I've only gotten off the ground in A10 with the tutorial guy walking me through everything. I just bought BS2 day before yesterday and I've already got a good handle on it surprisingly.

But yeah the video linked in the OP they spend about 40 minutes dealing with technical issues and then just trying to get off the ground so it's not a great video anyways, but people like their humor and want discounts on their T-shirts, no ads and goofy random videos so they pay the sub like me.
