This is the things that realy bugs me... when some muslim fanatic or arab kills some people he's a terrorist, when others kill people they never call them terrorists... and this is so wrong with world today... stereotyping is all people do and they assume and have no respect for other religions, cultures etc.

Ok, two things:

 

1) First, I totally called it on the shooter: when the first headline came up on the TV news, I turned to my coworker and said "what do you figure the odds are this was some stupid redneck who can't tell the difference between Sikhs and Muslims?"

 

...now, I thought about mentioning that here, but I *hate* positing that Americans are stupid; there's plenty of non-Americans online already going overboard with that. As far as I'm concerned, there's TONS of stupid, ignorant Americans- but not really any more than any other country, and it grates on me when everyone starts playing up stupid stereotypes about dumb Americans. Shut up, your countries have plenty of idiots, too. Physician, heal thyself.

 

2) Really? We're going to play up the ex-military angle? The guy was in the Army TWENTY YEARS AGO, for a SINGLE enlistment term, and he got FIRED (well, he got fast-tracked out), but the news immediately jumped on the "ZOMG, he was a military veteran! All military veterans are unstable psychos LULZ!" angle. Idiots. How about all the millions of perfectly sane, law-abiding veterans out there? It's just like how CURRENT soldiers' crimes get so heavily reported. You'd never guess it, but the crime rate among US Soldiers (and I assume other nations' as well) is WAY below the crime rate among civilians in the US. The news would have you believe otherwise. Maybe the idiot media should be looking into all his violent extremist friends instead of pointing to a passing stint in the Army 20 years ago.

 

Ok, make that three things:

 

3) What a shitbag. Kind of glad that the cops shot him dead on the spot; this way he can't weasel out of it on legal technicalities. That's just insulting. How can it possibly be justice when 6 innocents are dead, and the scumbag that did it lives comfortably for decades after? Also, all my (Army) coworkers agree, dirtbags like this are the worst kind of (technically) human.

 

Also, Kuky- yes, this guy was a terrorist, in every sense of the word. I never understood how it became an ethnic term.

Agree with you fully... and you make point which I would like to make also and that is... EVERY COUNTRY, RACE, RELIGION etc have phychos like this and bottom line is no one should call other religions being bad or worse... people from different places are simply different because of their way of life and bottom line is... people should RESPECT OTHERS and NOT WAGE WARS and people should finaly realise and accept that people under opression of any kind will fight against it and ecconomical opression is not excluded... why do people think there is terrorism? Well some are just FUBAR individuals whoare simply loco... but then some are cacrifising their life because they see no other better way to rebe against those who they think are opression them or their people... this is why we have war on terrorism now.... which is really just excuse to name muslims are the all bad people are islam as cause of terrorism... but fact is this is just ignorant way of thinking...a ctually not thinking because as you can see terrorism is not a muslim thing... it's going to be ANYWHERE and OF ANY KIND OF PEOPLE... Mass killings is nothing new in the States. It happens multiple times every year. We loose more then 10 000 people every year in gun shootings and accidents. That is more then number of people killed in Syria, many times more then during civil war in Kosovo and Metohija ... What we need here in the states is UN Peace Keeping blue helmets. :)

 

And we all need to be able to carry guns everywhere, shopping malls, grocery stores, schools .... Right now, if a mentally unstable person walks in the crowd with the gun, he has complete advantage and can kill as much as he wants. He can shoot at will and kill as many people as he chooses! Thus, everybody should pack at least a 9mm ... That would at least level the playing field and increase a chance to survive.

Just to put things in perspective, Syrian population: 22,530,000. Kosovo population: 1,733,000. US population: 314,134,000. That's ten times the population of Kosovo and Syria COMBINED. Yes, I would expect to see more fatalities.

 

...not that your numbers are correct. If you have an accurate source for gun violence in Syria, I'd like to see it; I'm pretty sure they're not handily available like the US FBI crime statistics. If you check the FBI stats, the 2010 firearms-related homicide total for the US was 8,775. This is HOMICIDE, not MURDER. That means justifiable (defense) shootings and accidental shootings (where the victim was not the perpetrator) are counted in this total. There were 617 firearms homicides ruled justifiable. So, 8,158 firearms deaths including both murder and negligent homicide (the FBI data doesn't break it down any further that I can see). Out of all the firearms homicides, that most evil example of the felonious firearms culture, the "assault rifle" was almost a non-player-only 358 homicides with ALL rifle types, to include pappy's ancient hunting rifle. One can only guess how many of the subset were "assault rifles"; and despite this, it's the arm that the activists are most strongly pursuing banning.

 

By the way, well over half the gun fatalities in the states are suicides, and not *really* linked to the availability of firearms (edit: for clarity, they're not included in the above numbers; they total around 15,000 all told). Considering that in Japan-where there are essentially no firearms available- the suicide rate is 20 per 100,000, twice the suicide rate in the United States, I think guns can be ruled out as the proximate cause in those deaths.

 

Also, Hajduk, I don't think you've EVER said anything nice about the US in this forum. EVER. For living here, you sure seem to hate it. Don't mistake that for me saying "you disagree with my stance on gun control, therefore you're un-American"; you're entitled to your opinion; but EVERY time you comment on the US, it's always couched in the presentation of "here's why the US is worse than every other 3rd-world shyte hole out there". It's getting kind of old.

And yet, gun crime (both in statistical rate and total quantity) is on a significant decrease, even as many struggle economically (typically a causational factor in violent crime). Funny, that.
