Hamblue Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 Hello All So far I've been doing ok shooting mavericks the "easy" way targeting with the pod and then slewing the mav to SPI. While it's fine doing this at 10 miles out I see the more experienced pilots flying low and engaging with mavs close range. I assume they are targeting using the Hud. Are there any video's or other that shows how to do this? Thanks Asus Sabertooth P67 Motherboard 2600k CPU, 16 gig DDR3, 1600. redfish Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 I use MAV seeker (SOI) in boresight and just manually slewing to achieve a lock. Using the HUD as a visual reference. Most times I know the seeker has a lock as the seeker reticle in the HUD will often 'jump' or skip to the target when I am maddly pressing TMS UP SHORT. Then its launch and leave. "Rifle! Bushmanni Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 Center the mav seeker if its not centered already, put AP in path mode and point your TVV roughly towards the target, trim if necessary and engage autopilot. After this its much more easier to slew the mav seeker on target using either HUD or seeker picture. You can also lower seeker slew speed by changing the value for "slew" OSB. Hamblue Posted November 26, 2012 Author Posted November 26, 2012 Thanks All What's the closest you can be when firing? Asus Sabertooth P67 Motherboard 2600k CPU, 16 gig DDR3, 1600. ilikepie Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 i ve employed them @ 2 NM on the quick draw, but they are much better used as a stand off weapon. whip out the Gau if your in close. you can experiment with them and see. Action After Contemplation
AtaliaA1 Posted November 26, 2012 Posted November 26, 2012 (edited) I was "In Hot" on some tanks one time, while pulling off target an SU-xx flew at me realy close had I not been in a 4G turn we would have collided, as I pulled through the turn the Mav. Sensor locked him I fired and KaBoooomm! I even recieved damage to my jet do to the frag. A Bit off topic. For some serioius CAS action take a look at Col. Bob Stoffys' Book "Cleared Hot" (Vietnam) or for some more recent CAS action try Kieth Rosenkranzs' Book "Vipers in the Storm" (Gulf War). Never has Close Air Support been depicted any better than in these two graet books. Rosenkranz has a CAS Mission were he had to air refuel in the middle of a TIC (Troops in Contact), they were spotted and recieving heavy fire from the enamy, backing off the tanker and rolling inverted he came screaming back on station scaring the halibit out of the Iraqies and saving some lives no doubt. That chapter was worth the price of admission alone. Edited November 27, 2012 by AtaliaA1 This was a Boutique Builder iBuypower rig. ralfidude Posted November 27, 2012 Posted November 27, 2012 Ham, just use the HUD to do it man, like here at 0:30, I dont even SLEW the mavericks, I position my entire nose of the aircraft and press TMS up short to lock up the aircraft, SOOOOooooo much easier this way: [sIGPIC]http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b66/ralfidude/redofullalmost_zpsa942f3fe.gif[/sIGPIC]

Jona33 Posted November 27, 2012 Posted November 27, 2012 Rosenkranz wasn't involved in CAS like you're describing. Possibly you're thinking of Dan Hampton? He just wrote a book called Viper pilot. The closest Rosey got to CAS AFAIR was attacking forces west (or east) of an airfield as the main targeting restriction. EDIT: Or possibly A Nightmare's prayer. A harrier pilot in afghanistan with a similar situation to what you described. Always remember. I don't have a clue what I'm doing

Rather than look at the mav's view for zoom I could try the hud zoom. Asus Sabertooth P67 Motherboard 2600k CPU, 16 gig DDR3, 1600.
