159th_Viper Posted November 28, 2012 Posted November 28, 2012 You do not. If your friendly starts frantically wiggling about and dumping countermeasures whilst squealing like a giddy schoolgirl about being locked up danger-close then chances are it's a buddy-spike. FLANKERATOR Posted November 29, 2012 Posted November 29, 2012 Jamming denies IFF until burn-through distance is reached, then IFF works normally. Burn-trough means radar able to separate contact from jamming signal and happens when you get close enough (about 13nm in LO). The only way to IFF a jamming target before burn-through would be using AWACS/EWR, flight/coalition comms or even mission intelligence such as briefing or player pool in MP. Nascar Posted November 29, 2012 Author Posted November 29, 2012 Thanks for the input, If someone launches a missile at me inside 13nm, is it pointless for me to turn on ECM after the launch? Yes, it won't do anything for you as you are already in burn-through range.....he knows who you are. i7-4820k @ 3.7, Windows 7 64-bit, 16GB 1866mhz EVGA GTX 970 2GB, 256GB SSD, 500GB WD, TM Warthog, TM Cougar MFD's, Saitek Combat Pedals, TrackIR 5, G15 keyboard, 55" 4K LED
lunaticfringe Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Yes, it won't do anything for you as you are already in burn-through range.....he knows who you are. This. Plus, if the weapon is HOJ capable, you're defeating the chaff you're dumping, along with defensive maneuvering, by giving missile a beacon home.
FLANKERATOR Posted November 30, 2012 Posted November 30, 2012 Thanks for the input, If someone launches a missile at me inside 13nm, is it pointless for me to turn on ECM after the launch? Pointless and harmful as jamming will make your own RWR less efficient in processing the signal of an incoming active radar homing missile which means you will get the missile alert later than if you were music off. Harmful also against semi-active radar homing missiles if someone launches at you before burn-trough as you wont get the launch alert ! ECM is a double-edged sword that needs to be used with caution.
