I'm trying to convert my model to edm format but there are a few things that I'm not able to solve and if anyone can help it will be great.

1. I'm not able to make the lights follow the camera which was done by selecting sprite in lom models.

2. Missiles don't travel with the wing when folding and neither they are attached properly to the pylons. It seems to me that the help with pylon numbers is not working for edm models.

3. I'm not able to take out the blue glare of the sky from the model. How can that be done? Specular is set to zero.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Thank you

Ouch.... Ok :P

About point 3, I found this:

5) HELP! My model has this weird looking gloss to it!!

A: In the "Material Editor", change the reflection value from the default 100 to 0.

1. Lights dont use sprites anymore, least im not using sprites *(anyone?). I use 3d mesh with Arg Visibility Track Animation

2. Note Sure but the Pylon has a Number for Pylon Type (Moving/NonMoving).

Try Changing the Pylon Type to 1 (Just a Guess), Or Link the Connector for the Pylon position to the moving part in Max so the Pylon Connector Moves with the animation,

ie

pylon(PylonNumber, Type, Y_POS, Z_Pos , X_Pos,
           {
               use_full_connector_position = true,
           },

3. Reflection has to be Set to ZERO, in Max under Material Maps. There may also be anther Material Setting causing this..

The Easiest way to convert these are in 3ds Max, and re-export with updated connectors, materials and meshes.

Converting to EDM through model viewer is Tedious. (I hope you're not doing that.)

If you need help Im on skype most of the day and when im in my office, my PC is always on so even if im not "there" i'll answer the message when i see it.

Hello Combatace, i have only one but very important question:

Do you still have your "old", original MAX file of your Su-30/Su-33 models ?

coz i dont understand why do you want to convert your file ? (by ModelViewer from LOM to EDM if you have the original in 3DS) :dunno:

1.

So, if you have original in MAX you will need to edit the NAV lights, i think you used dual sided planes ---> this will makes the problem with the ModelViewer conversion - in EDM you need to use only one sided plane (BillboardNode) or another option what i call: Starry, what is the older way...these are non rotating, fix planes on all 3 axis, but these need to be dual sided...so this is 6 planes actually

for landing/taxi lights you can use/make "old" dual sided planes, or the new style "light cones" (A-10A/C, F-15C/E)

Well, ModelViwer conversion usually makes wrong Billboards (coz of dual sided planes i guess) but i saw earlier a converted LOM-to-EDM model which used Billboards in LOM and was parfect also in EDM after the conversion (i cant remember which was it...i will search/take a look

2. The biggest advantage of converting older (CMD/LOM) models with ModelViewer:

You can add extremly useful Connectors with MV before the conversion. (of course you will need a perfectly prepared CMD or LOM models.

So, missile and ECM pod will travel/move with wingtip ONLY if you will add/attach perfectly positioned Pylon-Connectors to wingtips. (Pylon1 and Pylon12)

3. Do not worry about the blue glare, i will correct it to you, but yes you need to adjust reflection to zero.

4. Another important problems with converted models: materials with "builtin" colors without textures :(...this will no more glass materials in EDM

In EDM you must add textures for all glass parts also. In LOM you and other model makers used only MAX-builtin-colours for tinted glass parts: HUD, HUD lens, EOS-glass, EOS-ball, visor of helmet, MF©Ds in cockpit, NAV light bulbs/covers, front glasses of luminares of nose wheel etc. So, in EDM you must use textures for all glass parts (a small 8*8 pixels enough - full green, full yellow textures, etc.)

So, if want to use MV for converting you must ignore/forget the "builtin" colours, you will need to add textures for model parts/materials in LOM too.

Unfortunately i, dont have time right now, but i will help you after next week. There are many possibilities and tricks to edit/correct LOM models before conversion and/or correct EDM model after conversion.

Unlike SkateZilla i am sure the best/easiest/fastest way is using the ModelViewer for LOM-to-EDM conversion. Of course you will need a perfect and properly prepaired LOM model before you push the "Convert Model to EDM" button.

maybe i was just doing it wrong..

I was able to load the LOMs and save as EDM, but unable to convert textures. or place collision lines,

so I abandoned it.

I have my original max files and I'm using 3ds max 2010 to convert them to EDM model. There are a lot of changes that I made to my model and using max 2010 so I can't even open the file with these changes in max 8 and just convert them to lom and use model viewer to convert them to EDM.

For nav lights I didn't use two sided planes but a single plane to and used sprite which is not working now however will try billboard instead and post the results.

I made refection '0' and was able to get rid of the blue glare.

I'm still stuck with missiles movement.

@Skatezilla: I added you on skype if you are using the same name.

my max 2011 has a "Save as Max 2010 Option", So 2010 should be able to save as 2009, etc.

So if you made a newer corrected LOM model, (for MV conversion) then i think you chose the best way.

You need to add only connectors onto wintips (only). Yes, fix pylons perfectly treatable without connectors, by LUA (except: if you dont want to change pilon-shapes/positions or make it visible/invisible on same place)

err, maybe i mis read this..

Your workflow is in MAX 2010, so you export to LOM, and then convert to EDM in Model Viewer instead of just Exporting Directly to EDM?

As easy as it is to place connectors in ModelViewer,

it's easier in MAX, Place Point, Adjust Size, move it, Name it, Heiracrhy link it to parent moving mesh.

As for Lights, I dont really like the DCSW Light Textures, too big and puffy, I used my own 3d Polygon face arrangement and textures.

I wont go back to Max 2009, let alone Max 8, so many things were improved in 2011 over them it's not even funny, I save most of my work as Max 2010 because that's pretty much what the rest of the team uses.

Check your Su-33.LOM model with MV...your model have 21 connectors...(small purple cubes)...you need to create connectors and attach to wingtips...then missiles and ECM pods will travel with wingtips, otherwise wont (if you create ONLY - from model center coordinates - without assign&create connectors on/at wingtips)

for the lights?

3 plane arrangement.

...for navlights ?

I think it should be 3 planes if the planes are dual-sided, otherwise 6 planes ---> "Old style" Starry

Only one plane for (rotating- always faced toward to camera) plane ---> "New Style" Billboard

Thats what he's doing HungaroJet - the "helpers"(or "dummies") he is talking about are point connectors(named "pylon1" etc.) linked to the outer wing panels at each pylon position, but from the sound of it they no longer work because the required naming conventions have changed....or maybe there is some setting in the EDM plug-ins that needs to be assigned in order to identify the helpers as a connectors in the game?.

there's prolly a setting in Max User Define Box that needs to be set,

as His connectors are oriented and move with the mesh correctly in model viewer.

Seeing as the Stock EDM works and his doesnt.
