Yurgon Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 Hey guys, I have a question. I sense that this may be a dangerously-heated topic, but when did we decide that tap-and-release trimming was "correct" and holding the trimmer was "incorrect"? I guess I didn't see that discussion... I agree, there's no "right" or "wrong" way to do it. AFAIK the tap-and-release method is taught in Russia/east while the hold-till-end-of-maneuver method is more popular in the US/west. Regarding Black Shark, I'd say whatever works for you is the "correct" way. Personally, I can't stand the tap-and-release method and it keeps bumping my controls all over the place. I feel very comfortable with hold-through-maneuver, but I can see how tap-and-release would work well for other players. But unless someone is preparing to go to RL helicopter flight school, I can see no real downside in using each of these methods.
mmaruda Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 The tap method is supposedly what real Black Shark pilots do. It can cause bumps, because if you make too rapid and drastic changes to the flight parameters, the AP overcompensates or something. As mentioned before, you need to make your control curves smoother. As for the hold method, someone wrote that it's not advised as in the real helicopter, hydraulic pressure is released from the cyclic and it becomes floppy (not sure this is right). Anyway, one major problem with the hold method for me, is that it takes longer make precise manoeuvres and it's less comfortable when you trim with your thumb (more muscles are flexed when moving the stick).
doveman Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 First of all: many poelpe seem to have difficulty in trimming. This has been discussed time and again, with some people claiming that the trimmer is broken, tries to kill you etc. Bullshit! Same to you mate! I posted a video in my thread here http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1661763&postcount=76 showing how the stick jerks when clicking Trim, which in the air causes the helo to oversteer which can be fatal. After manually editing the TrimmerZones I was able to use Trim without it making the helo oversteer but only in Central Trimmer mode, the other mode is still unusable for me. Whether the modelling is perfect in BS2 or not, there's all these config files that can clearly make things not work properly, which obviously doesn't apply to RL, so just because it works for you doesn't mean it isn't broken for others. Please feel free to test and see if your stick jerks the same as mine when clicking Trim on the ground (or in the air). I note no-one who insisted that Trim is working fine could be bothered to watch my tracks I posted http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1652472&postcount=35 or comment on Daniel M or my videos http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1655247&postcount=37 or comment on ZaltysZ's posts http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=1660099&postcount=60 1 Main rig: i5-4670k @4.4Ghz, Asus Z97-A, Scythe Kotetsu HSF, 32GB Kingston Savage 2400Mhz DDR3, 1070ti, Win 10 x64, Samsung Evo 256GB SSD (OS & Data), OCZ 480GB SSD (Games), WD 2TB and WD 3TB HDDs, 1920x1200 Dell U2412M, 1920x1080 Dell P2314T touchscreen

That looks pretty much how tap-and-release works for me too. I haven't really invested any time to get to the bottom of it. I am next to certain that I didn't have this kind of bumping in BS1 when I was still using the Cougar. With the Warthog in BS2 (currently 1.2.2), I think it looks like in your video. But I've mostly gotten used to the hold-through-maneuver method anyways, and I rarely fly the Shark nowadays, so take this observation of mine with a grain of salt. But it's my impression that tap-and-release trimming doesn't work as well as it used to, so I too would ask players that don't suffer from it to refrain from stating that it must therefore work for everyone.

Thanks for taking a look Yurgon and confirming that you (probably) observe this as well.
