Jeans Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Ok, Its been a while. It seems the only time I post to the forums is when Im having a NIGHTMARE time installing these games. So I got a boss new pc for sims and I decide to install DCS world. First, I install DCS world.. check, then I install black shark 1 to install black shark 2 then I find out that I need an older version of DCS world to install black shark 2 too, so I uninstall DCS world and reinstall and install black shark 1 and then install black shark 2 then I uninstall black shark 1 then I install p-51, then I install dcs a10, to find out that the dcs a10 I installed is the wrong one, so I uninstall it and install the right one now it appears that dcs world is no longer on my computer, sure the files are all there but there is apparently no way to launch. So I have to start again (three hours by the way and thats WITH the files on an external). Lets compare that to how I installed rise of flight and all its planes, add-ons and miscellany that I have for it... I hit the install button, and it installed it and it worked. I REALLY think its time this convoluted mess of a game gets a new, simplified and better system for installation.
sobek Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 (edited) May i ask how you managed to end up with different versions of World and BS2? As to your problem, you need to make sure that the version numbers of the modules and DCS World match, you probably tried to install an older version of BS2 over a new version of DCS World. The easiest way out would be to make sure you have a matching set of installers (no matter what version as long as long as it is the same for everything), then install and let the autoupdater take care of the rest. Don't use an old installer for BS2 with a new installer for DCS World as this will not work. You can get the newest versions for all modules and DCS World from here and here. cichlidfan Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 He started with an old download (prior to the current version). Then he took the default settings in the final dialog and allowed World to start. Then said yes to update. Now DCS World is newer than the BS2 installer. EDIT: NEVER let DCS update until all module installations are complete. I REALLY think its time this convoluted mess of a game gets a new, simplified and better system for installation. Two things. It should not take 3 hours to install (at max) 6-7GB of software from an external USB drive. Rise of Flight is a completely different animal. It has no separate modules. Do you want to install multiple megabytes of software that you don't own/use (i.e. channel map, skins for planes you don't own)? RoF also does not have an older version sitting on their download site for the convenience of their users, even though you need an older version to use tracks from before v1.028. Two different systems for two different sims. EDIT: Don't misunderstand, I love RoF but it does take up a lot of needless disk space in order to keep that install simple. My DCS install is 10.9 GB (with mods0. My RoF install is 39.3GB (with mods). Tone71 Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Do you want to install multiple megabytes of software that you don't own/use (i.e. channel map, skins for planes you don't own)?... My DCS install is 10.9 GB (with mods0. My RoF install is 39.3GB (with mods). I'm not sure what mods you have installed for RoF, because my install is just under 10Gb! And all the planes are used by the AI, so I wouldn't say they're wasted megabytes :) (Not that we're here to discuss RoF; oh, and by the way, what are those mods, and are they any good!). Jeans Posted March 8, 2013 Author Posted March 8, 2013 As for the three hours, when I was installing Im doing a million other things, so I leave it to transfer and install, so coupled with troubleshooting, and testing it took about three hours. My point though, is that I cannot imagine I am the ONLY one who is frustrated and flabbergasted at the installation. Im no computer engineer, but I've been installing things forever and this is by far the finickiest thing I have ever fought with. As it grows, and I hope it does, the underlying infrastructure is going to need to become simpler and more user friendly. Surely steps can be taken to make the process easier. I mean, I'm with DCS for the long haul, its worth the trouble, but just imagine if it was less trouble. Don't get me wrong, I love this sim and all it stands for in todays gaming landscape, I just want installing it to be easier. Now I know that if I downloaded all the files fresh today it would be easier (except that I have black shark 1 + upgrade<<<<<which in my view IS an easy simplification), but I'd rather not have to do that if I can help it.
Wolf Rider Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 (edited) You're not saying, that while you are installing the program you are actually using that same computer at the time running other apps, are you? If you are... oh deary, deary me  the process for installation is simple... and racing into it with the hair on fire is not the way Edited March 10, 2013 by Wolf Rider City Hall is easier to fight, than a boys' club - an observation :P "Resort is had to ridicule only when reason is against us." - Jefferson "Give a group of potheads a bunch of weed and nothing to smoke out of, and they'll quickly turn into engineers... its simply amazing." G00dnight Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 well you must be doing something wrong because I have never had a problem and I'm a 52 year old computer idiot. I just download each new module for each part I own (which is all of them). then install world ... version, then install each ... module version. I DO NOT start or try anything before I have installed all modules. then when it starts it checks for any small updates to ALL the modules. I only do this for large updates like 1.2.3 otherwise I let the updater do it all, never had a problem. In case your wondering about MODS I use a renamed export system ala Peter P, Icemans EMC, Helios & TFS3 Feedback seat. All work fine in V1.2.3....But have to have files and folders changed, moved & added to. Go through it methodically and take your time if your time is that tight then forget it till you have time to do it properly and don't blame the game for you rushing and cocking it up..
