Bluewing Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 Hi all, May be one of you can help me here. I was watching the excellent training track "Strafing : SU-25T" from Ironhand... He is able to lock targets (AC sign) before I can even see them from that distance ! I don't mind Ironhand is cheating ;), I rather think that my settings are quite "moded". I tried removing the different Mods installed by Modman and set all my settings to high... I still cannot see the targets before Ironhand locks them  ! Any idea ?
23rd_Drago Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 Not sure I understand what you mean, but are you using TV monitor to search and lock the targets?

juan_mol Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 You will be able to see targets with the tv monitor (23x mag) from much further than you can see out the window. Most of the time you can lock a vehicle using the monitor and look out the window and see nothing, but believe me it's there.
Ironhand Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 Hi Bluewing, First and very important: This is Chris Warren's tutorial not mine. I just want to make sure he gets proper credit. I'm simply hosting it. Second, when I watch the tutorial, I do indeed see the target before it gets locked. I assume we are talking about seeing the target in the TVM (TV Monitor). The target is large enough under magnification that screen resolution isn't a factor. So something is definitely different about your setup from mine. Now I just wonder what the difference is. Bluewing Posted December 21, 2005 Author Posted December 21, 2005 Hi all, and thank you very much for your kind support. Just to make the subject clearer, I post a screenshot, where you will see that the acquisition system is on "AC" on the TV monitor, although the target cannot be seen... Maybe a config problem ? ---> @ Ironhand, sorry for the misunderstanding, still, I am very proud to be in touch with the incredible, very famous, very .... Ironhand !
Ironhand Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 One good picture deserves another. :) If you look at the land mass above the TVM, you'll notice that my screenshot occurred before yours. I think the target became visible at a range of 17km or so: So now I'm curious. Here are my graphics settings. But keep in mind that some settings are automatically changed by the track so that playback occurs properly. These are my normal settings: I wonder if different gaphics card/driver combinations yield different results. Guest ruggbutt Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 I have my land day and land night LOD's adjusted higher, so this doesn't happen. You have to have a pretty good vid card to do that.

FWIW, I use a (nearly) vanilla installation because of tutorial creation. The only thing I've altered is to give myself the lime-green HUD color. Bluewing Posted December 22, 2005 Author Posted December 22, 2005 Hi all again ! @ Ironhand : my settings are even higher than yours ! I think that some kind of Modman patch has modified somehow my graphic settings, and even if it shows "high", it maybe doesn't display that far ! I will try to make a new install (vanilla ? is that the word ?) and keep you informed. Thanks for your expert help :icon_supe
SUBS17 Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 Ground vehicles appear as blinking black dots and can be seen in ideal light conditions from quite a distance. Beaware that weather and the sun can make it much harder at dusk/dawn when doing A/G in lockon. [sIGPIC] [/sIGPIC]
Shaman Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 Changing land LODs don't do any harm to seeing units. I've just tested this. It does to land textures, they appear closer or futher depend on setting (entire roads can dissapear, because these are also land textures). I have heavily tweaked land LODs, and still see ground units well, on the TV screen as well. 51PVO Founding member (DEC2007-) 100KIAP Founding member (DEC2018-) :: Shaman aka [100☭] Shamansky tail# 44 or 444 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 100KIAP Regiment Early Warning & Control officer
Bluewing Posted December 23, 2005 Author Posted December 23, 2005 I think I have found the clue... I resetted my old graphic settings through Modman, and as wrote Ironhand in a previous post, I was able to see the target from about 16.5 km. I think the problem came due to the installation of Thomas Weiss FPS Tweak (which is absolutely excellent !). In the Graphics.cfg, the values ObjectFogMultiplier and Fogparam1 where set to 0.8, resp 16. I changed these two value to the normal settings again (0.6 - 12) and now I can see the targets from much farther. :D 1
