Glider_UK Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 I don't know if this is a silly question but I am assuming that the switches used are all of standard widths. When making panels for other people the holes are 12mm top panel and 10mm for the clear panel that the switch bolts too. Are these measurements standard for all toggle switches generally used in cockpit making. glider http://www.modeldesigns.co.uk Mobo Asus Maximus XI RAM:64GB DDR4 CPU:Intel I9 9900 Nvidia 2080TI WIN10 64Bit HP Reverb
agrasyuk Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 Nope, switches will have varying dims of mounting system. enclosure will also vary depending on exact switch config (spst, dpdt etc) But the predominant type us indeed 12mm diameter opening . Anton. My pit build thread . Simple and cheap UFC project
jrsteensen Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 Find the switch you are going to use for each position, pull the datasheet. It usually has a recommended panel cutout size. Switch mounting holes are certainly NOT one size fits all. OpenHornet F/A-18C 1:1 SimPit Website :: DCS Thread Link :: Discord :: Github ::

Thanks for the replies guys. If I am making panels for other people though I need to pick a generic size unless they request a different dimension. So if the predominant size is 12mm I will stick with that, which is the switches I use. jrsteensen Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 And, what I'm saying is there isn't a generic size, unless you specify the switches....unless you are going after generic switches and not ones that look similar to the military switches. Good luck! OpenHornet F/A-18C 1:1 SimPit Website :: DCS Thread Link :: Discord :: Github ::
Flim Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 Jr is right... your really wasting your time unless you can spec out each panel with the switch you will use.
JG14_Smil Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 Average heavy duty toggles all use 15/32 drill bit hole size. Other switches and buttons vary as stated. Micro switches usually use a 1/4-40 thread, which is a very hard tap size to find.
Glider_UK Posted June 4, 2013 Author Posted June 4, 2013 So I will have to only make custom panels (which is not a problem) but kills the idea of doing 10 or 20 a time. http://www.modeldesigns.co.uk Mobo Asus Maximus XI RAM:64GB DDR4 CPU:Intel I9 9900 Nvidia 2080TI WIN10 64Bit HP Reverb
metalnwood Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 Shouldnt do? I am just going to tell people what sized switches they need to get for my panels and I ensure that anything that size or smaller will work with my panels. I dont see why you cant do the same? By smaller, I mean the enclosure size that sits behind the panel. They will have to still get the same panel mount size, e.g. 12mm for most.
