159th_Falcon Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Damn, close call that was then. BTW, since ive never been in the armed forces or anything alike. Could you tell me what an RLP is? Most likely something obvious. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] The keeper of all mathematical knowledge and the oracle of flight modeling.:)
ferriwheel Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Just think about this, in real life the size of a MFD is almost as large as your entire screen, in a flight sim it is scaled down to nearly the size of a button on a real MFD. The apparent size (the portion of angular area of your total field of view it takes up) of everything else is scaled down by the same ratio compared to their real life counterpart. It's natural to have trouble spotting them even with infinite resolution. Playing a flight sim on a IMAX screen with infinite resolution will probably make target searching no more difficult than in real life. For this reason, not only do I not believe that having the ability to zoom (at least to the point of real life apparent size) is cheating, I'd say it's still inferior to real life target recognition in that your field of view decreases as you zoom in. Most likely something obvious. Oh. As a matter of fact, RLP is an expression used on some forums meaning Real Life Pilot. I guess it's suppose to mean 'Take my word for it, I know what i'm taking about". A bit condescending I suppose and one doesn't realizes it because it's used regularly. Intel i5 2500K 4.2 Ghz GTX560 Ti Twin Frozr ii 16 Gb DDR3 RAM Win 7 64 bit [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Night Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 In real life, your eyes would not be forced to view the world and fly a combat mission through a 1920x1080 resolution. Up to a point, using the zoom feature is more realistic than not using it. Eldur Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Before targeting pods pilots always had to use binocs to find stuff, so zooming isn't much of a cheat. I remember reading about A-10A pilots doing so. I changed the FOV range to 3 - 90° back then in LO / FC / FC2. Now in DCS World it's done by placing the Server.lua file in %HOMEPATH%\Saved Games\DCS\Config\View (same folder structure as in the DCS folder) and editing it. Look for the lines like the following: CameraViewAngleLimits = {30.000000,90.000000}, First value is min, second is max angle. I tried setting the min value to 3°, but there seems to be a hard limit somewhere between 20 and 30°, so I decided to set it to 30° which is approximately the angle my screen offers, resembling a viewport close to being realistic as it should be in the most cases. So, no fake binocs for me :D I didn't like to zoom out more than 90°, that's why I lowered it. Was 120 or even 140 IIRC, totally useless and even more ugly. Larger FOVs than ~30° are just for compensating the small viewport, but I don't see any use in being able to see to the left and the right at the same time on a single screen :D BTW I use the throttle axis of a second stick for zooming.
