First Robbed Miz

Ok, well I can't wait all day...;)

I can take "0" credit for this, this miz was designed for the Huey by someone a lot smarter and more motivated than me:pilotfly:

I put the MI-8 in it and renamed it. It works have fun.

leave the AFCS off it makes it more fun!:P

The CSARandAM mission was a good choice

The "Helicopter Wars" would be more of the same goodness with more going on around you if you want to modify that one for us too.....

Not tested, but I added 1 MI-8 to Each side. This Miz is complex so I do not know if it will work right.

Here is to trying :drunk:

I'll jump in and give it a try. I think the designers original intent was to switch the Russian side to all MI-8's when they became available. I know next to nothing about modifying missions myself at this time

Edit: OK I gave it a try from the Russian side. The AI activity around the map seems to run and progress as expected. I don't have access to a radio command that allows me to load troops even though my base has them available. The Russian side uses all MI-8's for AI helos so maybe all user helos should be too. The other side is of course all Hueys. I did not try rearming to mount gun pods to see if that works. You are called on to do some straffing as well as SAR and Troop Transport. It really is a well crafted miz by the original author for the Huey and MI-8

Edit: I can load troops in the CSARandAM.miz but I can't seem to Rearm and mount gun pods here either. Nice of Wolle to offer some advice below this post

Hi,

I am the author of "The Helicopter War" mission. I am away on travel this week, and can't send you an updated version which includes Mi-8s.

The version that was posted on the "User Files" only automatically detects UH-1H clients. To change the code such that it also automatically detects Mi-8TVs, you need to unzip the mission file, then open the file "initializeAI7.lua" and change line 86 from

if value.type == 'UH-1H' then

to

if value.type == 'UH-1H' or value.type == 'Mi-8MT' then

Once you have changed that line, you should be able to add Mi-8s in the mission editor as clients at will, and the code should automatically detect them.

But I can't try it out, because as I said I am away on travel.

Will post an updated version within two weeks.

@ Wolle: Your mission is at the top of my play list for well crafted missions for these helicopters. Will be hard to wait for your MI-8 update but enjoy your travels

Update,

Ok I figured a way to save it back to a miz file and I made all the red clients MI-8's, the verbage in the messages still talks about Hueys, I have found it is impossible for me to get the radios to work in the MI-8 so the downed pilot can be located. Even with the helps I have found in the forums, when I get the switches set right I do not know which radio to use for FM nor how to set it so this mission is unplayable at this time for me.

Perhaps you will have more luck. I did put the line 86 change in.

Hi,

This waaay over my ability and training but I am trying. I opened the miz archive using 7zip.

Inside the folder I found the lua file and opened it in Notepad ++ went to line 86 and made the change exactly like you said.

Now how do I zip it back to a working miz file? I tried zipping it to 7zip and renaming it, that did not work..:helpsmilie:

Hi,

I think what you did is correct. As I said, I am away from my computer that has DCS installed, so I was working blindly when I suggested the change of line 86. It is possible that it requires more changes, ... It is also possible that the Mi-8's radio operate in a different frequency range, so it may be that you can't receive those frequencies, and it may be possible that it doesn't have a homing function for those frequencies. Since I have been on a trip since before the Mi-8 module came out, I can't say.

I am at a small town in Austria now with nothing to do, could anyone PM me the Mi-8 user manual, then I'll have something to do:music_whistling:

Anyway, good luck, and keep us posted if you make any progress.

B.t.w. it will still talk of 'Huey' clients unless you change the text in the same file, but that's only eye-candy, would be nice to get the other items sorted out first.

@Tusler Thanks for the effort to fiddle around with this mission and the advice from Wolle. Until the radio issue gets worked out (I think the system is not fully active yet), I just open up the map and get a direction to the unit referred to in the message. It works and once you get in the area they pop smoke anyway

Edit: I can't seem to re-arm the MI-8. Since you are asked to strafe convoys and other things at times maybe the mission has to start with gun pods mounted. The re-arm/re-fuel commands seem a bit buggy at this time. The Hueys have mini-guns mounted by default too in this mission

@wolle I tried to PM you the Quickstart manual pdf but can't see how to include an attachment to the message ? Maybe just going blind. The full manual is not available yet.

The random events generate very well in the mission. The map works well for plotting a course without the radio in the MI-8.

Definitely need gun pods on the MI-8 though. Lot of unfriendly folks out there.

YEA we now have weapons :cheer3nc:

I changed them from transport to ground attack and gave them a full load because I do not know how to get the weapons loaded on when they are set as Transport:doh:

I am wondering if we changed to unlimited fuel in the options if that would be a workaround for a while...I wish they had unlimited ammo also:gun_rifle:

Under Options menu then the Game play tab you can set unlimited fuel and unlimited weapons!

I am going to try the F10 map trick you talked about it sounds good.

Yeah just draw a line with the appropriate map tool and you will get a course bearing and distance readout. Get you close enough anyway.

Once the weapons are there it should be easy enough to delete what you don't want to get the weight down so you can carry a load of reinforcements.

Edit: I don't seem to be able to adjust the weapons loadout but the weight is still low enough so you can get a load of reinforcements onboard. Usually your first call is for a downed pilot but for sure while on your way you'll get a call from someone for reinforcements. Just note the group name and find them on the map. Dialing a course in on the HSI will give you a mark to steer to.

Hey it works and thanks for your efforts. This really is a well crafted mission for these helos and Wolle will clean it up when he gets back home from his travels I'm sure. In the meantime we get to play in a very dynamic mission.

Watch your six. The fighters like to shoot down helos if they spot you. Easy enough to steer around the ZU-23's though

My appreciation for this mission "The Helicopter Wars" by Wolle, just keeps increasing. Survivable from either side but not guaranteed. Random outcomes to events going on around you. Even playing SP you feel like your AI buddies are actually doing something and you're not in it alone. You can get taken out but you don't feel like your up against overwhelming odds. You can avoid fighting and just do SAR and troop Transport or get in it and shoot stuff along the way. Wonderfully replayable SP or MP.

Love the MI-8 too but load her up and you really feel like you're dragging some weight around. The Huey's a hummingbird in comparison but won't carry the load of the MI-8. Really looking forward to seeing both evolve to "Final" release

Hey Lorenzoj and Tusler,

Have you guys bee able to find out if the Mi-8 has an FM homing function like the Huey. If so, over what frequency range?

Just curious...

I was under the impression that the radio-nav system was not fully implemented yet. There is info in the quickstart about the VHF (com radio ?) but nothing about nav radio use I believe.

For the moment in the MI-8 as said above I have been pulling a course line on the map then dialing the course reference into the HSI. Gets you there.

Was good that Tusler gave us weapons for the time being but a full load makes for a heavy bird. Haven't been able to re-arm within the mission and change the loadout though. I trust you'll be able to straighten it out when you get back.

Hi Wolle,

The only thread I found for radio help was

http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=113242

I read the manual and I have not been able to get the AM or FM or ADF radio to work. I am expecting them to fix that on the next patch because so many people are talking about it.

I expect they are working on...

English Cockpit

Rearm and Refuel

Radios functionality

Not necessarily in that order

Great job on that mission though looking forward to when you can get it fixed for the MI-8.

I kind of wish they would have coded in a 2d pop up window for radios like FSX does, may not be realistic but it sure is functional:)

Have a good trip!

The Helicopter War mission now including the Mi8

Sept 17 change log for the Helicopter War mission

-- replaced Russian UH-1Hs with Mi-8s (note that in the present beta version the Mi-8 does not have FM homing capability, navigation to targets must be done by dead reckoning or by using F10 map)

-- infantry battles can now be reinforced multiple times until the battle is lost or won. Reinforcements can happen either sequentially, or in parallel by several choppers.

-- you can now request escort helicopter gunships that will fly into your vicinity and engage enemy choppers they find on their way.

Your feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks Wolle. I was trying hard not to pester you about the revision. Going to grab it now and give it a go.

Still think this is the best balanced mission for these older helicopters out there and seems to be getting better.

And another thankyou to Tusler for a good attempt to get the MI-8 in this mission while you were away.

Just ran a quick mission with the MI-8. Nice.

Wondering if it's possible to allow re-arming at this time or is that difficult with the current beta. Although the loadout of a couple of the smaller gun pods and a couple rocket pods is ok from a weight standpoint.

Could we load less then a full load of 20 troops if desired

Did you expand the active area a bit. Looks like a bit more going on. Prob just my imagination

I'll have to look into that. I did not disallow rearming. It rearmed OK in the Huey version AFAIK. So, it could be either a beta thing with the Mi-8, or it requires different ground units to be present. Need to do some testing.

I am very new to the Mi-8, and don't master using the weapons systems, yet. So, I chose this weapons load-out blindly, and haven't yet tested it if it is reasonable regarding game play of the mission. You can very easily change the weapons load-out in the mission editor. Maybe you can play with that and report to me what is a good weapons load-out.

Could we load less then a full load of 20 troops if desired

At the moment the number of troops it loads is a fixed number (8 for the Huey and 20 for the Mi-8 to reflect its larger payload capacity). But I can easily change that number to any value (maybe to 8 and 16?).

Did you expand the active area a bit. Looks like a bit more going on. Prob just my imagination

Possibly, I changed some things, and then back again, and so on. Not sure any more how it exactly compares to the previous version. In addition there are now 2 escort helos on each side flying around too...

Setting up to fire the different weapons seems a bit confusing initially but not so bad after a few run-throughs. The quick start guide is fairly clear with decent illustrations.

I'll have to make the effort to learn a bit more about mission editing/creation. It does seem that in some missions you can change weapons (rearm) but in other missions also with weapons loaded you cannot. Perhaps someone who already knows what to do could jump in an give an explaination

Your mission seems to be evolving very nicely and deserves a lot of play
