Guest EVIL-SCOTSMAN Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 I disagree a lot with phone companies infrastructure and hardware everywhere becoming more and more state of the art ,a stable 56K in a decently tweaked computer is very playable and enjoyable . I'm playing all sorts of games online on a 56K and I ping reasonably well to most servers , I'm even surprised 504th'server's in England , it's very playable to me and I'm in Canada. It's not like it's 56K all the way to server , after meandering thru the snow ,across the woods and rivers eventually my signal gets on the same highway as dsl or cable users. But yeah if hi-speed was available I would gladly sell both Evil's Scotsman legs to get it :P well dude, your 56k was better than mine, also i found my old 512k bad, i couldnt get a decent game of AA unless it was euro servers as my ping was always 200+, now for a fps when everyone else has 30-60, 200+ is insane, not too sure if it matters as much on flying games as it does with fps games, but i could never ever be as good as my buddies playing fps games til i got 2mb then onto 8, they were all based in the us, and we would invariabley join us servers, so that probably was the problem for me, but i will admit to playing il2 the original when it first came out on 56k and it was ok, not til battlefield vietnam came out and the majority of servers were based in uk or europe could i start to think about pwning them every single game :icon_supe. but as i say, for flight sims maybe it doesnt matter as much as say trying to play bf2 on a 56k line which in my experience would be nigh on impossible, not sure as i havent tried 56k for bf2, but even with 8mb and uk servers, it sometimes is just laggy as f00k, and it cannot be blamed on video lag or whatever on meh good pc. I always thought my dsl was b0rked, but every time i ran tests on the speed, it would always be just under the speed phsyically and with overheads it would bring it right upto the rated speed, so there was nothing wrong withthe line, typical dload speed for me with 56k if i remember was 3-5kb max

ARM505 Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 BF2 needs to pass a lot of data over the connection, so no matter the ping, a dialup just won't cut it, sure. LO has a lower total data volume to pass (I would imagine, it can run at 33 dialup settings I assume), but ping, or latency remains as important as always for immediate response. I'll take a line connected at a rock steady 150 ping over a fluctuating 10-200 ping line for flightsims. We don't need to take the insta-kill headshot type shots for sims compared to CS or BF2 as well, hence we can accept higher pings I believe.
SUBS17 Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 I find in situations where you are doing A/A high ping players tend to be difficult to shoot down. But on the other hand A/G its not so bad, it depends on the Host as to how high a ping can go. [sIGPIC] [/sIGPIC]

I hear alot of usa peeps complain that where they live they cant get better than 56k, that really astounded me, as i thought that everywhere in the states they had a minimum of like 2mbit and thats was likethe lowest, but it dont look that way. I also found that no matter how fast some ones connection is, its never enough, after a few months using 8mb which was magic to start with, 4-8 gigs dload an hour still isnt fast enough and am always wanting more. Its typical, we always want faster and faster. i want adsl2 which is being released in my area soon, 24mbit a second down, that works out at roughly 3 megabytes not bits a second, so a 3mb file would take a blink of an eye to dload :p then i will need an extra 2-3 terrabytes storage for all the pr0n i be downloading :p
Prophet_169th Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 Its usually not the ping that kills the game, its the packet loss. Having a high ping, just has a little delay, most the time you really wouldnt notice, unless you are doing some serious and consistant dogfighting. Packet loss on the other hand, causes things like severe warping. The one thing that really, really makes me mad about super high pings is; You send a message letting the person know his ping is way too high and he should check his connection settings, reconnect, reboot. And they NEVER acknowledge you speaking to them. Or try reconnecting, or ANYTHING! You put their name in the message, so even if they dont understand english they could just type that, and maybe some of our more lingual people could help them out. Scotland is a different country, with a different political and economic structure. In most places, if a company can still take your money, and not put any back into upgrades, they will.
Guest EVIL-SCOTSMAN Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 In most places, if a company can still take your money, and not put any back into upgrades, they will. that describes uk and scotland to a T, they will rip us off if they dont need to upgrade.
Kula66 Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 I just fired 3 120s and someone who was bouncing around all over the place! I think he had about ping=399 All missed and he shot me down. Not exactly fair ply ... I'm sure he wasn't doing it deliberately, but it does spoil the fight!
